Alternative Rock’s Greatest Hits

June 29th, 2010

Sometime in the early 80s a genre called Modern Rock was born. It evolved along the way to what we now know as Alternative Rock. Some stations call it Adult Alternative and that encompasses slower material usually or mid tempo songs. The real alternative rock stations are ones like K-ROC in Los Angeles, or 105.3 KITS in San Francisco and they play songs from such bands as Weezer, Green Day, System of a Down, Rise Against, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many others. These are the types of songs and music that appeal to today’s younger listeners but it is definitely not an exclusive relationship. More and more baby boomers and older adults are tuning into this music, some for the first time since being stuck on Classic Rock for many years, and finding that the serious nature of the music and the quality of the songs and melodies appeal to them. This music is not that far removed from the Classic Rock that they grew up with but with a fresh twist that draws people in once they get past the initial rejection.

I have heard many of my older baby boomer generation friends say that they just don’t have time to listen to anything new. These people are just making excuses because they still have time to listen to the old stuff. They drive around all day listening to the greatest hits by the Eagles, the Who, Led Zepellin, CCR, the Beatles, or the Rolling Stones. They love these old familiar favorites because like home cooking, they provide comfort. Trying something new requires a little patience and you need to risk some of your precious time. But the rewards of listening to some of the great new artists that are out there right now, making their own greatest hits as they go, is the discovery of new music and the making of new memories.

We love old familiar Classic Rock songs and greatest hits compilations because these songs are forever linked in our memories and minds with wonderful experiences of growing up and falling in love and maybe even having kids. Listening to new music can help you to make new connections and give you fresh insights and memories that will last for years to come.

Listen to the Alternative Rock stations for a little bit each day. Discover what the young people already know, that there are some fantastic bands out there creating wonderful new greatest hits of rock and roll that will stand up with the best of all time. Bands like Kaiser Chief, the Bravery, Finger Eleven, Foo Fighters, Silversun Pickups, MGMT, and many others are recording some wonderful music that is not to be missed.

Greatest hits are being made right now by wonderful alternative bands and once you have listened to them and their great new music, you will be hooked forever. So go ahead, take a chance and risk a few hours of your time. What do you have to lose?

Computer Security

June 28th, 2010

Well, enough of talking about the need for protection. Let’s talk about solutions to these problems. What can you do in computer hardware security to ensure that your data and information is well protected? One is to purchase and install a firewall security appliance. Physical firewalls offer protection from spam mail, spyware and central policy management that makes the entire process easy. A hardware firewall is positioned between the computer and the modem. Some routers also have an inbuilt firewall and can be used to offer protection to multiple computers on a network. Hardware based firewalls have the advantage of having their own operating system running independent of the computer operating system, thus offering an additional line of defense should the computer’s operating system and security settings be compromised.

Computer hardware security by use of devices called dongles is also considered more secure than implementing a purely software-based security option. For dongles to be compromised, physical access is required, thus they offer one of the best protections. Another advantage of using hardware devices like dongles is the fact that read and write access to data is usually very difficult if not impossible. Unauthorized access and tampering is very strictly prohibited thus offering a high level of protection.

Computer hardware security also has the advantage of sometimes requiring a user to log in, log out and set other privilege levels only on a manual level. Sometimes, this access is only permitted by use of biometric technology. Sometimes this access is permitted based on the current state of the user’s hard disk and DVD controller. This high level of protection in computer hardware security offers protection that software cannot override.

Computer hardware security can offer high level protection when well implemented and when combined with a software component. However, no system is full proof. You can be sure however that with computer hardware security, your data just got a little more safety.

Music Business News

June 26th, 2010

Those looking for the latest music business news may be confused by all of the information out there on the Internet, mostly because much of it is outdated. The business of selling music, concert tickets, and even movie or television soundtracks is not what it use to be. The days of playing your heart out in local clubs and traveling around to different states hoping to be ‘discovered’ are pretty much over. It still happens, but the industry has changed dramatically, thanks to the Internet.

If you think about it, it makes a lot of sense that the Internet has changed the industry of making and selling music. Most up-to-date music business news stories will tell you that thanks to downloading music to MP3 players and other digital gadgets, it is easier than every for consumers to find what they want and buy it. They don’t have to drive to the music store and buy an entire album they are not sure they are going to like. They can buy single songs in digital form and own it within seconds. That has changed everything.

Because consumers are spending so much time and money buying music this way, fewer are buying CDs. You may think that this bit of music business news has nothing to do with those hoping to be signed by a record label, but that is not true. The Internet has changed that too. Though people still love to go out and see live music, those bands wanting exposure do not have to rely on that as much. They have the Internet as a way to reach out as well. Some succeed without a record company footing the bill for a tour.

How do they do this? That is what is making the latest music business news. Some bands are so crafty that they sell enough of their own songs that they really don’t need the backing of a record company, though this is now the best way to get that very thing. If you can prove that you can sell so many songs on your own, a record company may pick you up and put you on a tour. They want to make money, and if they see you are already doing that, they may just want a piece of that money for themselves. The smartest bands are the ones that think twice about these arrangements if they are already doing fine on their own.

To find the latest music business news, search hard online. Even better, search out bands on MySpace and other music related sites and ask them how they are doing and what they have done to be successful online. There is no doubt about it, it still takes hard work to make it in the music industry, but today it takes a different type of work in a whole new direction. Things have changed, and they will continue to change. You just have
to find a way to keep up with the latest news. The Internet has changed most business sectors, and music is no exception.

Free Latin Music is Available Online Illegally

June 25th, 2010

Everywhere you go these days people are pumping up the volume on free Latin music that they are downloading illegally from online file sharing sites such as Limewire.com or Napster. These free sharing sites are really just another name for illegal pirating and the people that are putting up these sites should be stopped and prosecuted in the opinion of many in the music and film business. A lot of time and money is spent to make the music that these artists and film makers create and for someone to just give it away randomly or steal it from the internet is completely wrong.

This is outright stealing and is covered under international piracy laws. You would not think of bringing your movie camera to your neighborhood multiplex and filming the latest release like “Avatar” or “Kick Ass” and then making thousands of bad quality copies and selling them on a street corner in Managua, would you? But that is precisely what you are doing when you download free Latin music or any form of music from the internet without the artists’ permission. It is hard enough for most musicians to make a buck these days without some goofball grabbing up his intellectual property without paying a dime.

If you think about it this form of piracy is just about being cheap. If someone wants free Latin music so badly why can’t they just sign up for an account with itunes.com like everyone else and pay a measly ninety nine cents per song, which is what most tunes cost these days. In some instances songs cost a bit more, but I have never seen them cost more than one dollar and twenty nine cents each. Don’t tell me you can’t afford ninety nine cents to pay the royalty rights to your favorite artists. And don’t even think about calling yourself a fan of these musicians or actors that you are stealing from. This is like some stranger coming up to you, picking your pocket and then telling you how much he loves your work. If you really love their work then pay for it like everyone else.

Free music and videos online are usually very poor quality anyway and you are never really getting the experience that the artist intended. I know a lot of people that tell me they don’t care if the camera is shaky or the film grainy or the sound quality muffled. These are the same people that eat fast food for breakfast, lunch and dinner and drink Keystone Light while telling you how much they love it. No one loves Keystone Light. They buy it because it is dirt cheap. Any one that buys or drinks this stuff is a cheapskate and that goes double for people downloading supposedly free Latin music online. It is wrong, illegal, and unethical and you need to stop.

Importance of Music Education is Still Lost on Some People

June 25th, 2010

An old friend of mine that I had not heard from in nearly 20 years called me up the other day and we talked for several hours. He said he had just been thinking about me and some the good times that we had had hanging out in high school, and just wanted to see what was going on in my life and what I had become.

“I always thought you would be a musician,” he said.

I was in band in high school and could play nearly every brass instrument. I have always been a great lover of music. That’s why it really disturbed me when he told me that the music program at his daughter’s school had been cut. It was then that I realized that the importance of music education is still lost on some people.

I asked him why the program had been terminated, and he told me that the school district was having to cut back on expenses, and the first things go were the fine arts programs. He told me that his daughter was just devastated, because she played flute in the band, and now could only practice on her own.

I have heard about this trend in some districts around the country, and I thank God that it was never an issue at my school. The importance of music education in my life has been paramount. I really feel that I am who I am today because of my exposure to music in school. I have become cultured because of it, and learned to appreciate the beauty of music and that was all fostered while I was in school.

The importance of music education is that it gives many students a break from the other core subjects students are required to take, like math, English, science and history, and allows them to explore their creativity.

Now, please don’t mistake what I am trying to say. Obviously, math, English, science and history are the most important subjects at school, and there is a reason that they are stressed to the degree that they are, but music, art, dance or whatever creative medium a student may prefer enriches one’s life in a way that those other subjects alone cannot.

The importance of music education can be seen by listening to your favorite musical group, and it does not matter what genre. At some point, those people were exposed to music education at an impressionable age, and are now creating music that you and millions of other people can enjoy on a daily basis.

In the play “Twelfth Night,” William Shakespeare wrote, “If music be the food of love, play on.” The importance of music education cannot be underestimated, and if I ever hear of music programs being considered for removal from my local school district, I will go to that school board meeting and protest.

Tequila Worms Play Surf Museum

June 23rd, 2010

There is a first time for everything and it is hard to believe but the Tequila Worms just played the surf museum for the first time. Due to odd weather, instead of playing outdoors, they were moved inside. Now those of you who know this surf band, know how loud they are. It is one of the negatives I have against this band.

It is always a bit warm in the museum but this day was exceptional with so many people crammed into this small landmark. You could see the facial sweating of the popular drummer Travis as his famous 100mph drumming wowed the crowd.

It is rumored the next museum gig for the Tequilas might be in August. If you are anywhere near Huntington Beach at that time, you will not regret catching this rising surf band.

Classic Rock Songs that Stand the Test of Time

June 23rd, 2010

Everyone has their favorite classic rock songs and it usually has to do with what they were doing at the time when they first heard it. If you were experiencing your first kiss with Suzie Q. and Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” was blasting in your dad’s Plymouth as you leaned over, chances are that every time you hear that song for the rest of your life you will get a cheap thrill. Music and music memory are tied to our emotions and our life experiences in deep, unknown ways that psychologists have been trying to decipher for a long time. Our subconscious is a strange and complex place and for some reason music seems to stir passions and energies that we never even knew existed.

Sometimes the reaction to certain songs is not love, lust, or romance, but annoyance, irritation, or hatred. I myself for some reason cannot abide any songs by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush. It is not so much the songs themselves that I can’t stand, but the high, reedy, whining voice of their lead singer Getty Lee. Yet many of my friends swear by Rush and think that I am off my rocker.

In comparison, I love many of the classic rock songs by another Canadian, Neil Young, and I have been surprised by the vehemence of negative emotions that this name conjures up with some of my less enlightened associates. Suffice to say that Neil Young is no friend of white Southerners, especially after his pointed attack on them in the classic rock songs “Alabama” and “Southern Man” (one obviously was not enough for Neil). When Lynrd Skynrd made “Sweet Home Alabama” and mentioned “We heard old Neil sing about her, I heard old Neil put her down. We hope Neil Young will remember, Southern man don’t need him around anyhow,” this incited a fresh round of racist flag waving.

This whole thing with Neil Young is very strange since Neil basically made his living playing acoustic, harmonica-tinged Southern rock with classic albums like “Harvest”, “Harvest Moon” and many others. Neil also contributed many classic rock songs that endure to this day as some of the very finest ever written. Classic rock songs like “Harvest Moon”, “Southern Man”, “Heart of Gold”, “Old Man”, “Needle and the Damage Done”, and “Rockin’ in the Free World” are all examples of country music mixed with rock and roll.

Classic rock songs have a way of stirring up emotions that you just don’t get in any other genre of music, in my opinion. Take for example one of the greatest classic rock songs of all time, “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zepellin. It was voted as the greatest song ever written and yet continues to be bashed by people saying that it has been overplayed to death. In the hit comedy movie “Wayne’s World” there is a sign on the wall at the Guitar Center that reads “No Playing Stairway to Heaven”. In Hermosa Beach, California, at the great blues and rock club, Café Boogaloo, there is a sign on the wall that reads “No Mustang Sally” which always struck me as hilarious since “Mustang Sally” is not a bad song. After hearing every two bit jam band play that song to the ground I realized that maybe not playing it was a good thing.

Long Haired Music For A Popular Culture

June 21st, 2010

Modern culture, some would even call it, post-modern culture, today’s culture of rock and roll, rap, jazz, is best described as culture for the populace, popular culture. This ambiguous yet identifiable culture is the one we are most familiar with and what we oppose to the ‘old’ culture, the culture before Elvis Presley, the Beetles, and B.B. King. With music, in particular, we can easily identify the modern culture over against the culture that produced such music as comes from classical music composers such as Haydn, Handel, Lully, or Purcell. We immediately note that these older composers worked primarily with orchestral expressions, with full symphonies of oboes, bassoons, wood winds of every sort, a variety of brass instruments, even harps, and of course concert pianos. While we occasionally will find modern music employing this range of instruments, most of us consider a lead guitar, a rhythm guitar, a bass and a set of drums all you really need to make beautiful music in our age. While that may be, and while today’s music may move us as did the work of the classical music composers of ages pass, we would be doing ourselves a disservice not to give an ear occasionally to the work of the ‘long hairs’ who once thrilled royalty, the aristocracy, the people of a culture from which our own has sprung.

Yes, classical music composers produced a music that seems at times overly complex and subtle, as if you needed a Masters in musicology to understand it, but that is because our ears have lost the refinement, the careful attentiveness that these classical music composers presupposed of their audience. If we approach classical music with our hearts and minds as well as with our ears, we can easily appreciate the monumental works of a Mozart or a Beethoven. Music addresses the heart first, the emotions, and these are something that are at the very heart of every human soul. Classical music is no different than modern music in its purpose, namely, to move the heart and mind towards an apprehension of beauty in sound.

Modern music composers and classical music composers both aim to stir the mind and the emotions with the same elements of music, with melody, polyphony, harmony, rhythm. The very principles that define the classical genre, those of measure, unity, clarity, balance, proportion, have not been superseded by modern music: the classic principles or art, poetry and music which were elucidated by the ancient Greeks such as Plato or Aristotle, and taken up when these were re-discovered in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries still condition the music of our own day. If you doubt this, just compare some of today’s music with that of the Baroque, the Rocco, the impressionist, with classical music composers such as Debussy or Stravinsky. What you will find is that in both styles, modern and classic, the ideals of careful craftsmanship, idealist control, and formal beauty exist in both.

Give an ear to the long hairs of old. You’ll find that they describe much the same emotions, the same wonder, the same delight in sound that today’s long hairs do with metal and electronic vibrations. The instruments may be somewhat different, the goal, the apprehension of beauty, remains the same.

Cuban Music is Popular Around the World

June 21st, 2010

For such a small island, Cuba has asserted incredibly big influence over the music of many countries around the world. Long renowned for their great artists such as Tito Rodriguez, Celia Cruz, Ibrahim Ferrer, and many others, Cuban dance music has transcended popular music and crossed international and language barriers all around the planet.

Cuba is known for sultry women, great cigars, rum drinks, beautiful beaches, and fantastic music. The great American writer and adventurer Ernest Hemingway made Cuba his second home and was famous for drinking Mojitos, smoking Romeo and Julieta cigars, and sport fishing. He wrote his famous and wonderful “The Old Man and the Sea” during the time he lived here and could be found holding court at his favorite Havana bar, “La Bodeguita del Medio” (translated as the little store in the center). In the 1950s Havana was THE destination for chic socialites and movie stars. They would stay at the centrally located Hotel Nacional and it was required that you be seen at the Tropicana nightclub. The Tropicana was the most famous nightclub in all of Cuba and featured the very finest Cuban music and musicians, along with dozens of gorgeous dancers in typical clothing and outlandish costumes. The Tropicana was world famous for the quality of music and shows that were presented there nightly.

Cuban music came back on the scene in a big way in the late 90s with the release of “The Buena Vista Social Club” movie and CD. Featuring legendary Cuban musicians such as singer Ibrahim Ferrer, the Buena Vista Social Club became a huge international hit for the band and producer Ry Cooder, who was credited with discovering the group. Another great Cuban music band that has lasted over 40 years together is Los Van Van. Los Van Van won a Grammy Award about ten years ago and featured some of the greatest songs ever recorded. Their brand of music is generally called Salsa or Son Cubano and their leader Juan Formell has been hailed by many as a musical genius without equal.

Some of the other great Cuban groups of the last twenty to thirty years include Son 14 with the raspy, rum and cigar voice of their singer Tiburon (shark). Son 14 made many great records in the 80s and 90s, establishing themselves as one of the greatest Cuban music makers of all time.

Another fantastic and legendary band was NG La Banda which won fans all around the world with their melodic and infectious dance hits. Sierra Maestra was another great band from that same era. Cuban music has been around a long time and will continue to thrill audiences around the world.

The Last Classical Music CD I Ever Bought

June 16th, 2010

When I visited New Orleans a few years ago, I headed down to a music store in the French Quarter with my aunt and uncle, who are both big jazz fans. We were all perusing the various genres of music when a sales associate approached me.

“Can I help you find something?” he asked with a smile.

Now, my favorite kind of music is classical, and I was in a jovial mood, so I said that I was looking for a classical music CD that included Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. I was expecting a surprised or dumbfounded expression, but the associate smiled again and said, “Right this way.”

He walked me over to a section that had a rather sizable classical music selection and that included three different CDs with all six of the Brandenburg Concertos. Now I was the one with the surprised and dumbfounded expression.

I had not bought a classical music CD in months, and New Orleans, the jazz and blues capital of America, was the last place I expected to find what has become one of my favorite recordings. I began to wonder what else the store may have had that would be worth purchasing, so I continued to look.

I found a copy of Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Seventh, Eight and Ninth Symphonies, and an assortment of other pieces that I knew and loved. Many of them I already owned, but some I did not.

I eventually found so many other interesting classical music CDs that I put the Brandenburg Concertos back and bought several of the others. When I returned home, I was quite contented with my haul, but wondered why I decided not to buy that one classical music CD.

Last year, I made another trip down to the Big Easy and the first place that I went was to that little music store down in the French Quarter, just to see if that one particular classical music CD might miraculously still be there.

Sure enough, there was the CD, in the exact same place, with the same composer and orchestra. I wondered if anyone had even touched it since I’d picked it up a few years ago.

This time, I went ahead and bought it, and I actually felt a great sense of closure as I left the store. My aunt and uncle were very happy for me, though they thought it was strange that I had left it in the store in the first place, and we returned home after a great day of sight-seeing.

The Brandenburg Concertos was the last classical music CD I ever bought, thanks to such innovations as iTunes, but it was quite an experience to find such a good classical music selection in that shop in the French Quarter. The CD itself is still one of better ones I have.

80s Music Hits

June 10th, 2010

We tend to think of the 70s as the disco era and the 60s as the time when rock music developed. 80s music hits included great bands like Tears for Fears and their fantastic international number one hit Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Shout. The 60s were the days of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, and a host of other great bands that we now think of as the seminal groups in rock history. But the 80s were a different story and do not get the respect that many experts think it should.

The 80s was also the time of bands such as the Psychedelic Furs and their big 80s music hit ìPretty in Pinkî from the movie of the same name. There were modern pop groups too like Pet Shop Boys and their huge 80s music hit East End Boys and West End Girls or the digital Depeche Mode with Strange Love, Policy of Truth, Personal Jesus and Route 66.

Who can forget Simple Minds and Don’t You Forget About Me? There were plenty of great groups making 80s music hits that just don’t get the credit they deserve. The 80s were also the time of Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna, three giants of the industry who continued to churn out hit after hit for many years. Prince Purple Rain was just the right blend of rock and soul and the big hit from the album was Let’s Go Crazy.
80s music hits were not limited to Pop music, but were also being created by bonafide rock bands such as Duran Duran with their hit Rio and also Bon Jovi with what many consider one of the best of the 80s music hits Livin On A Prayer.

There were some extremely dark songs as well like the moody Voices Carry by Til Tuesday, a one hit wonder. The Fixx added their fiery brand of rock with Red Skies at Night.

Whimsical music was also the order of the day and groups like Wham and their hit Careless Whispers topped the charts. A-Ha, a pop group from Sweden also rocked on with their big hit Take on Me.

A Handy Guide To DVD Recorders

June 7th, 2010

The Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) recorder is a storage system that runs like, and is analogous in many ways, to a VCR. DVD recorders record video on an internal disc within the DVD recorder, which is erasable and writable. They are able to register from analogue video sources and in lots of instances from digital camcorders. The DVD recorder has AV ports and can be used to register television shows with the operation of the fitted television tuner. The DVD recorder is accessible in lots of configurations.

The recorders exist in three main forms, the standalone DVD recorder, DVD/ Hard Drive unit, and mini-recorders. The standalone DVD recorder is utilized in television and can be employed to record programs. numerous hold MPEG-4 compression that is utilized for the real time compression of picture data. Some enhancements found in some recorders will present time based correctors and noise cutback functions. The mini DVD recorders will be sited in digital camcorders. The DVD/Hard Drive units are employed in computers to write and read PC data and they give writable and erasable media.

The standalone DVD recorder is not equipped to write or read data from a PC, but can record video in real time to a DVD disc. In order to interface with a PC, a standalone DVD would need to have drivers installed, and that is not part of the construction of recorders. However, with the employment of specific software for PC video editing, some DVD video files that were created on the PC, may be sent to some DVD recorders using a firewire interface. This is not a typical process for a DVD recorder, but if it is achievable the details would be portrayed in the operating handbook. There are many great televisions to watch your DVD recorder on including a Samsung tv.

DVD recorders are very trouble-free contraptions to function even though they may have an intricate design. They utilize different recording systems, video and audio compression formats, diverse tuning choices and various broadcast benchmarks. These recorders supply good sound reproduction and fine image quality. Recordings last longer than those on magnetic tape, and they do not have to be rewound or fast forwarded, given that they run through random access to the necessary video sector.

The recorded videos are easily searched because of the presence of chapter menus. Damage of recording quality as a result of regular generation loss and frequent playbacks is kept to a minimum. If you are on the lookout for a DVD recorder, be certain to contrast prices, compare the recording times that are supported, the speed of the unit, and the option of creating numerous recordings at the same time. Other things to look for are the warranty period, and the image and sound quality.

The Ups and Downs of Learning Guitar

June 7th, 2010

For the most part, learning to play guitar is thrilling and fun. However, every guitarist can have the so-called ups and downs in their learning and play. Sometimes your play may be totally breathtaking and you feel up, while other times you can make tons of mistakes and feel down. In this article, we will explain the reason to these “downs” and give advice on how to avoid them.

There are three major ingredients for a perfect play: motivation, patience, and mood. So, if you find yourself in the “down” state, try to adjust these three.

1. Motivation: The main point is to have a strong motivation. Remember why we decided to learn to play guitar. Do you have a favorite song that you want to master? Do you want to impress your friends or family? Do you want to play in a band? Try to remember your motivation. You can even write it down on a sheet of paper, or find an image that would symbolize your ultimate goal, and hang it on the wall in front of you.

2. Perseverance and patience: Many guitarists want to accomplish everything at once, but it does not work this way. You need to stock up with patience and persevere.

3. Mood: If you sat down to play the guitar with a bad mood; it will not work too well, so do your best to improve your mood.

If you have good motivation, a lot of patience, and play in a good mood, you will have all that is needed to succeed and reach another “up” period. The “up” is when you play much better than before. It is when you play some melody the way that only professionals could distinguish your play from that of the original performer.

What else can be done to lift your spirits? Read biographies of the great guitarists and listen to beautiful guitar music. Another good way is “comparison” – try to remember how you were before, and you’ll see that you have achieved tremendous results. You can become much better than now if you keep being positive, stay motivated, and persevere.

Finally, remember to practice each day in order to master guitar. It often happens that a guitarist loses their mood and concentration, such as after a vacation or the holidays. This can lead to making a lot of mistakes, losing the speed of play, and losing plasticity in the fingers. If you abandon your guitar for a couple of weeks, you may soon see the above “symptoms”. The best remedy is daily practice. Playing the guitar every day can boost your progress by 50% compared to playing it 3 times a week.

You don’t have to play for hours. It’s enough to have 30 minutes of daily practice. You can allocate more time on the weekends. The main thing is to take a new step every day, even if it will only be 5 new chords. If you miss a day, try to recover the next day. Also, avoid bad mood. Try to improve your mood first, and only then take your guitar.

New Blues CD by G Carter Is Out

June 7th, 2010

There isn’t anything more that I enjoy at the end of a hard day than to flop down in my lounge chair and listen to so smooth and relaxing music. No one is better at putting out soothing music than George Carter. His sounds of blues guitar backed by gentle strings and piano accompaniment isn’t an assault on the ears. His newest CD titled appropriately stop sweating the hard stuff is in my opinion his best yet.

The next time you want something easy to listen to, pick up Georges new CD.

Outlaw Country Music Is A Different Breed

June 4th, 2010

In the realm of country music, outlaw country music holds a very distinct and special place. Started in the late 1970′s, this style of country music featured some of the best country artists of all time and the best country music ever performed.

Outlaw country music was started in response to a style of country music called the Nashville sound, which was a bit softer than country had ever been. Such country music artists as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash were the originators of outlaw country and really made it what it was.

Jennings was the king of outlaw country music for me. He had a number of songs that exemplified the style, including “Lonesome, On’ry and Mean” and “Honky Tonk Heroes,” which was a tribute of sorts to the old honky tonk-style country singers like Hank Williams and George Jones.

Outlaw country music is a different breed because nothing before or after sounded quite like it, and it was extremely popular while it lasted, which oddly enough was not very long. It went against the establishment and had a more rugged sound.

One of the interesting things about outlaw country music is that there was a women’s movement during that period that featured such performers as Jessi Colter and Sammi Smith. Jessi Colter was actually Waylon Jennings’ wife, and with him she created the great compilation album called “Wanted! The Outlaws,” which was a huge success.

The outlaw country music movement also spawned a new movement in country music called Texas country music, which has already established legions of loyal followers. Hank Williams III is one of the more notable musicians from that movement.

One of my best friends asked me one time if I thought that outlaw country was better than other types of country music, because he liked more of the pop country style of modern artists. He said that it just seemed to be more listener-friendly style and that it appealed to a much larger listening audience than some of the outlaw country artists.

I told him that was precisely the reason that I prefer outlaw country music. To me, it had more of an authentic feel to it, and when I listened to it, I knew that I was listening to real country music and not a pop song.

I grew up with outlaw country music, idolizing guys like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. It definitely turned the tide of country music back to what it was supposed to be, in my mind, and featured some of the greatest country musicians of all time. Anyone that wants a good introduction to country music should definitely check it out.

Original Song in our life

June 3rd, 2010

We know of a lot of great musicians who have never written an original song in their life. Some of the greatest technically brilliant musicians of all time were never able to write good, popular songs.
Some of the worst instrumentalists of all time have written original rock songs that have made millions of dollars so it is bewildering to think that the best have trouble creating original tunes. Although the left side and right side of the brain theory has been debunked, it is still basically true that creative people do not always make the best technicians and vice versa.

Original tunes are not created using a formula. That being said, there are some guidelines for writing popular and rock tunes and that formula has worked brilliantly for many years and for many of the top selling artists of all time. The chorus is also called the hook and may be repeated at the end while the recording fades.

This does not teach you how to write a hit original song. You still need to use your imagination and have lots of feeling. Most of the time a hit original song comes from a person’s life experience or something painful that happened to them.
