Professional Singers Search Song Lyrics

July 29th, 2010

There are few things that will turn an audience against you quicker than not knowing the song lyrics. Your band mates will also notice, even if you think they won’t. Everyone knows when you are muffing your lines. Just like a bad actor in a play, when you screw up the words it really makes the whole thing seem amateurish. The solution is simple: learn the words! What could be easier than looking up the words to the songs you are singing onstage? Getting the lyrics using an online search engine can be a challenge however and if you go on the wrong sites you could even get very bad viruses.\

Assuming that you were not born in the 1920s and know how to navigate in cyberspace, knowing how to search song lyrics should not pose much of a problem. Go to Google or Yahoo or one of the other five billion search engines and type in “lyrics green day dookie” and it will pop up at least a hundred hits of sites that have the lyrics to all of the songs on the Green Day album called Dookie. When you click on some of these sites you will indeed get the lyrics you desire and you are free to copy them and paste them into a Microsoft Word format or just print them from the page you are looking at. Some sites however do not allow you to copy the text. Many more sites have a annoying popup asking if you want to purchase the Ring Tone for the song lyrics you selected. This is so very annoying because if I had wanted to search for ring tones that’s what I would have done. I wanted lyrics not ring tones and that is why I searched for song lyrics not ring tones.

The worst that can happen is that you click on the link for the suggested site and immediately you get a virus warning that pops up on your screen. “Your Computer is Infected!” the popup screams, blinking in and out menacingly. “Click Here to Run a Computer Scan” and if you do click there a virus is immediately downloaded onto your computer that will not allow you to surf the web anymore. This is called a Web Hijacker Virus or Phony Security Warning Virus and whatever you choose to call it the end result is that you could lose all of the data on your hard drive. You might have to get your hard drive scrubbed and that is definitely bad news especially if you have not backed up your hard drive in a long time.

So be very careful when downloading or when you search song lyrics online. You might get a Trojan or other harmful malware and lose a lot of your work.

Downloadable Audio Books

July 24th, 2010

I actually discovered downloadable audio books completely by accident. I never intended to download audio books, But they were in a folder of some music I was getting off a filesharing client. Without looking at it, I selected the whole folder. I was curious why it was taking so long to download, but I didn’t worry about it that much. When I opened it up, however, there was a whole online audio book included along with the songs that I had wanted to listen to. It was something that I wouldn’t have downloaded normally – I think it was a lecture on the history of Britain or something like that. Since I had it, I decided to listen to it. That downloadable audio book definitely changed my Internet listening habits forever.

The neat thing about downloadable audio books is that you can listen to them while you are doing other things. These days, more and more people spend large quantities of time on the Internet. Most of us surf the web and check e-mail, but it goes beyond that. A lot of us make money online, do research for school on the Internet, or have other uses for it beyond just recreation. After several hours in a row, the Internet can get pretty tedious. With downloadable audio books, however, you never have to worry about that. You can always have something interesting going on in the background even while you are surfing.

My favorite thing about downloadable audiobooks is that I can find things that are a little bit difficult to find in print. You see, the Internet has always been a haven for the weird and rare, and this is nowhere more apparent than with downloadable audio books. My favorite things to find are turn-of-the-century readings by obscure authors. I love the scratchiness of the recordings, the differences in vocal cadence, and the chance to hear someone who has always only existed in text for me before speak for himself.

This isn’t to say that you can’t find more mainstream audio books online. There are downloadable audio books by all of the big authors if you only look for them. Still, you might as well just read that stuff in paperback. To me the biggest thrill has always been finding things that are obscure and unusual. That is where the Internet really shines if you ask me!

Does Your Used CD Shop Give You an iPad for Your Collection?

July 23rd, 2010

Do you know that there is such a thing as a used CD shop? You probably have considered taking your CD collection out to them for some spare cash; and you would have too, if only they weren’t so cheap for what they give you for your precious music. There really is no point hanging onto CDs anymore some say; they just take up too much room. And how do you listen to them through the course of the day – carry a fat Discman with you when you could compress it all down to a sliver of an iPod? Speaking of iPods, here’s a grand alternative to the used CD shop – a company called iPodMeister, whose business model is so attractive, you could be forgiven for wondering if it was a scam.

Here’s the deal then – let’s say you have your eye on a shiny new Apple product – an iPod or one of those iPads that everyone keeps dreaming about these days. If you can’t come up with the asking price on your own and you’d need a little help, all you need to do is to barter your shoe boxes full of CDs that you last heard in the last millennium, for the Apple device of your choice. The iPodMeister idea was the brainchild of a bunch of struggling musicians. They found out that people in poorer countries couldn’t really afford to buy CDs at the prices they sold for; and they would really appreciate it if they could get their hands on some great classics on the cheap. They found out that all they had to do was first sidetrack a little of your business with the standard used CD shop down the street, take up your collection themselves and sell them overseas. They made a tidy profit, much better than anything their music ever put their way. Before you try the ransack your collection for that elusive iPad though, you do need to know that they have some pretty tight eligibility criteria.

They aren’t very particular what CDs you have (unless they are one penny CDs or foreign language stuff), but they do need to know that you have the CD in its original box, with its original liner notes. And oh, it can’t be a copy. They’ll take DVDs as well, but they are really particular that there be no serious scratches. So how much do you have to dig around in your collection to make that shiny new Apple device you want? They certainly don’t do business on very favorable terms – depending on the model of apple device you want, you’ll need to put down anything between 600 to 1000 CDs or DVDs, to get an iPad. If you want to rip your music before you send everything in, just in case you change your mind about listening to that old Duke Ellington CD for the 10,000th time, they’ll rip the whole set for you, if you’ll give them an extra 200 CDs. This actually works out to be a better deal than going to the used CD shop. However, if you would list your swag over at eBay, you could probably do ten times better.

History of Roxy Music

July 6th, 2010

The 1970s was the time for glam rock and Roxy Music was one of the most successful bands around. The band have disbanded and re-formed for different projects over the years. The debonair Bryan Ferry was the charismatic front man and he has also sustained a solo career. Ferry founded the band along with Brian Eno, who later left and became a sought after record producer. Their debut single was Virginia Plain. Other members included Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay and Paul Thompson.

There have been a number of live albums released over the years, the next best thing to listening to Roxy Music live. The first one was Viva, released in 1976 and recorded at the Apollo in Glasgow, City Hall in Newcastle and Wembley Arena. The record features Do the Strand. The High Road is an EP, released in 1983, and again, recorded at the Glasgow Apollo. The four tracks are Can’t Let Go, My Only Love, the Neil young penned Like a Hurricane and Jealous Guy, the John Lennon song that Bryan Ferry had released as a solo record. The Heart Still Beating album from 1990 was pieced together from various performances in Europe during 1982.

Dance Music Songs And The “Forbidden Genre”

July 4th, 2010

I recently found myself in an online argument with complete strangers over a list of the twenty five greatest songs of the “oughties.” Or whatever it is we’ve decided to call the decade that ran from the year 2000 to the year 2010. And yes, arguing online is like running in the special olympics – even if you win, you’re still retarded. But I just can’t help myself.

On my list of the top 25 songs of the decade I included two dance music songs: Kylie Minogues 2000 hit “Can’t get you out of my head” and Lady Gaga’s 2008 release “Poker Face.” While there were those who supported my selections, there was one person who was very, very much against including any dance music songs on any top 25 “best of” list for any reason.

And from my point of view, that’s kind of ridiculous thinking. Dance music songs tend not to be my favorites, and the genre itself has given rise to some pretty awful stuff as a whole, but that doesn’t mean that the genre can’t ever produce worthwhile music. And I think the two dance music songs I mentioned particularly illustrate that.

And the fact is, music critics tend to hate manufactured bands and dance music songs the most. The most frequent criticism thrown at them tends to be that they’re somehow faux; that the music they make, even if it is very good, somehow counts for less because it was not made for purely idealistic ends. I think this is blinkered hogwash.

After all, just think about it: Neither Bing Crosby nor Frank Sinatra wrote their own music. Neither did Billie Holliday or Ella Fitzgerald or Nat King Cole. Nobody was more manufactured than the singers of “standards” in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, yet those singers are almost uniformly venerated by the same critics that hate every manufactured band from the Monkees to the Jonas Brothers to points beyond. It’s an arbitrary and useless distinction on their part, one born of cultural attitudes moreso than any realistic assessment of the music that’s been produced by these acts.

So which dance music songs have really stood out for me besides the ones I already mentioned? Well, it depends upon what you consider dance music. For me, I’d throw the French grou Daft Punk into that genre even though others consider them “electronic music.” If you’re not counting them out, then virtually everything they’ve done over the years belongs on a list of the best dance music songs.

Choosing Your Acoustic Guitar

July 3rd, 2010

Before you even start playing, you have to pick out your acoustic guitar. This is a subject of some debate among guitar experts. Should you buy a beginner guitar, or should you go all out and get something more expensive? Many people believe that beginner guitars are the way to go. That way, if you don’t like playing, you haven’t wasted too much money. Other people believe that you shouldn’t confine yourself to cheap acoustic guitars. If you have the money, you should buy a really good ax. That way, it will be a joy to play. The better it sounds, the more you’re going to want to play it!

In my opinion, the best approach is a compromise. Whether you are getting acoustic electric guitars, nylon string classical guitars, or some other kind, it shouldn’t be the bottom-of-the-line. Get something that is decent, but not overly expensive. You can usually find acoustic guitars on sale for less than 200 dollars. Take someone who is experienced along to help you pick it out. Choosing the right guitar, after all, is crucial.

Music Recording Schools

July 2nd, 2010

Some careers are easier to break into than others. In the past, if you wanted to be a sound engineer, you had to find someone who would be willing to teach you and take you on as an intern to learn how to do it and to make the connections you need to find a good job. These are great paying jobs for the most part, but some of the hardest to find. Today, you can go to music recording schools to learn the same skills, but this does not guarantee you are going to find work. You may still have to start from the ground up, but it does help to have the know-how already in place when you start.

There are many different music recording schools out there, but they are certainly not as plentiful as colleges for cooking, business, or nursing, for example. There are a few that are solely devoted to teaching sound audio recording and some have this as part of a larger liberal arts type of education. These schools are not going to be as inexpensive as your average community college, and you may have to go for about two years to have a decent degree to shop around once you are done with your education. Look for music recording schools with good internship programs if you decide this is what you want to do.

There are a few different types of jobs you can get once you come out of music recording schools. You could find work with a recording studio, but it does depend on where you live. This type of job is typically in more densely populated areas, but there are some rural areas with opportunities. You can also get work doing audio for video, which would include TV, movies, commercials, and other types of media like corporate video. You can also do live sound in clubs or on tours with musicians. Some works is studio work and some is in the field.

When you start out at music recording schools, it is important that you start going out and networking with those in the field you wish to pursue. This is just as important to your education as what you are going to learn in the classroom and recording studio in your school. Venture out into the local clubs and introduce yourself to those doing what you want to do one day. Keep in mind that some people are going to be more receptive than others. If you get the cold shoulder, it is part of the industry. Move on to someone else who is more willing to take you under their wing.

Once you have finished your education, take on any internships you can find if you have yet to do so. This is one type of career that relies heavily on hands on experience. You can only learn so much in the confines of music recording schools, no matter how good that school may be. Plan to start small and work your way up to the more lucrative and more prestigious types of jobs that you seek. Don’t be afraid to try different jobs, like audio for the local news, even if you want to tour with a rock band. You may find something else just as fulfilling, or at the very least, a great addition to your resume while you search for your dream opportunity.

Country Music DVDs

July 1st, 2010

One of the hottest singing sensations in America right now is 20-year-old Taylor Swift. She has built up a huge fan base because of her catchy tunes and highly personal lyrics, and received tons of publicity after rapper Kanye West infamously interrupted her during an awards acceptance speech. Once that happened, I became interested in Swift’s songs, bought a couple of her CDs and a few country music DVDs on which she appeared, and now I’m hooked!

Believe me, I never thought I’d be buying country music DVDs and CDs, as I’ve never really been fond of that genre. But Swift’s tunes are more of a pop/country mix and are actually very catchy. No wonder she has tens of thousands of so-called “crossover” fans! Her songs have a certain quality that appeal to all kinds of people, and have helped her become one of the top-selling artists of the year.

Anyway, after liking what I heard from Taylor Swift, I decided to try other artists in the genre. I found a couple of websites that offer discount country music DVDs and CDs, and went on a bit of a shopping spree. I bought stuff from the likes of Toby Keith, Darius Rucker, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, and Rascal Flatts — and loved nearly everything! I have practically worn out all of my country music DVDs already and am going to have to buy a bunch more pretty soon.

Just in case you’re curious, these country music DVDs usually feature such things as official videos for popular songs, concert footage from live performances all over the United States, and behind-the-scenes interviews with the stars. Buying country music DVDs has allowed me to learn a lot about these artists in a very short period of time, and has made it easy for me to become a huge fan. After watching countless hours of concert and interview clips, I feel like I know the singers in a way that’s not possible just from listening to their songs. It’s almost as though I’m more deeply connected to the artists than I would be from audio CDs alone.

That might sound a bit hokey, but it’s true and makes me want to buy even more stuff. So in addition to country music DVDs, I’ve also purchased books, magazines, posters, t-shirts, and key chains featuring my new favorite singers. And who knows, I might even take in a concert or two in the near future!

It’s funny how an incident like Kanye West’s antics at that awards show can bring an artist like Taylor Swift to the attention of folks who might not have heard of her before and result in her becoming one of the top performers on the planet. Thanks to Kanye’s bad judgment and the right mix of country music DVDs and CDs, the genre now has at least one new fan!
