Video Music Awards

October 29th, 2010

The public can be surprisingly forgiving and forgetful when it comes to celebrity scandals, at least as long as they keep on coming one after the next, but it’s going to be quite a while until anyone forgets the Kanye West stage storm-on that rained on Taylor Swift’s parade at MTV’s Video Music Awards. Kanye risked committing career suicide and made himself the target of endless ridicule and denigration as the celebrity and non-celebrity masses denounced his unexpected, immature outburst, and continue to do so. The now notorious VMAs incident has evoked angry tweets, outraged blog posts, parody websites and on-air/off-air criticism. Unsurprisingly, some have called for a Kanye West ban at the next Video Music Awards.

And this isn’t the first of Kanye’s unexplained and unbelievable stunts. Kanye also famously stormed onto stage to express his displeasure after his “Touch the Sky” video lost to Justice and Simian’s “We Are Your Friends” video at the 2006 MTV Europe Music Awards, claiming amidst a plethora of expletives that the show lost credibility without his win. In a pre-performance to the 2007 Video Music Awards, Kanye thought that his song “Stronge”r would have been better to open the show instead of Britney Spears, so he rapped about how the VMA’s choice was due to racism against him. And speaking of racism, people still remember, or if they forgot they are now reminded of the infamous Hurricane Katrina incident in which Kanye went off-script in a tirade about George W. Bush not caring about black people.

Few would deny that Kanye was way out of line, but when looking at the situation as objectively as possible, you wonder whether there’s at least a shred of cred to what Kanye’s saying. True, there’s a history of racism in America, and some might question the validity of Video Music Awards wins. Indeed, spectators have often claimed that more deserving performers were robbed, and in the end the decision of best video is really a matter of personal opinion. But being nominated for a VMA in the first place shows that a performer deserves some recognition, and the performers themselves have nothing to do with the results. Taylor really had nothing to do with the decision, and Kanye had no right to take out his issues on her. It’s unfortunate that Kanye only makes himself look like a fool and offends others by carrying out his supposedly righteous agenda. Even if Kanye’s opinion really had any merit, he expressed it in a most inappropriate way and he’s going to have to face the music for a long time to come.

My dream of becoming the musicians choice

January 14th, 2010

I used to have a dream of becoming a professional musician, or more like the world’s most famous guitar player, winning MTV and musician choice awards. Well, it didn’t actually turn out that way.

Going to a music school in my home town I soon learned that I was a terrible musician. I couldn’t play the guitar at all, and I know my classmates were making fun of me behind my back. That hurt my feelings, because I really wanted my dream to come true. But with most dreams you wake up, and so did I. Fortunately, I found a different passion, and that passion was for singing.

Singing was something that was a lot easier for me than playing the guitar, and I have no idea why. Perhaps it was because of the technical nature of playing the guitar, perhaps I have voice chords of gold. Anyhow, I soon became the sing star of high school and found myself in a studio with the latest music recording software. This turned out to be one of several times I recorded in a studio, however, this dream too came to an end when grown up life put its chains on me.

It’s strange how some people make it in life and thousands do not. Living out your dream really takes courage, discipline, and the strength to go against the herd. Herd mentality is one of the biggest enemies of all accomplishments, so if you want to make a difference in life it is usually a good sign that walking the complete opposite way as everyone else.

Looking back at the time in a music recording studio, playing concerts in front of large crowds, and simply having fun with my band mates, I really miss it. It sure beats a desk job. So don’t follow in my tracks, or the tracks of all the other failed musicians out there. Stick to your dream, and perhaps you will some day receive a musicians choice award of the highest ranking kind.

The Echo- German Music Award in Berlin 2009

January 30th, 2009

On 21st February 2009 the German music award, the Echo, will take place at O2 World in Berlin for the 18th time. Since 1992 the award has been given for 24 categories every year.
As usual, this year there will be a lot of national and international celebrities from the music industry. U2 are going to present their new song “Get on your boots” live! Not only on stage but also in the audience there will be loads of famous people who have been nominated for the “famous” award. One of those will be Lenny Kravitz and Jack Johnson who are both nominated for the “Best international male rock artist”. Or Madonna and Amy Winehouse who are competing for the award in the category “Best international female pop artist”. Now we have to wait to see which of them will finally take the prestigious award home.
The actress and singer Barbara Schöneberger as well as the comedian and presenter Oliver Pocher will present Echo this year.
The German Phono academy organises the show every year and the winner of the Echo is based on the music charts. The best national live act is voted online so everyone can participate. A special panel of judges decides who gets the awards for the life’s work and the special price.

This echo award is for artists representing rock/pop and folk music but every year in autumn there is the classic Echo which is for classic artists only. Since 2001 the Pop- Echo takes place in Berlin every year but the location for the Classic-Echo changes every year.
Tickets are available starting from 49 Euros (standing). Have a look on the official homepage echopop.de to see where you can buy the tickets. There you can also find more nominees in other categories.

If you want to see the Echo and all the celebrities live you should have a look for tickets soon since a lot of people want to see the event. You should also have a look for an Unterkunft Berlin soon. If you are looking for a Hotel Berlin you should hurry up since they are booked out quickly in Berlin. Do not forget that Berlin is a famous destination for tourists! You could also have a look for a Ferienwohnung in Berlin which might be an even cheaper alternative to a hotel. An apartment is also bigger than a hotel room so you and your travel partners have much more space!

Cat Stevens' Father and Son - A Universal Song
Songwriters set out to create a song with what is known as a "universal appeal." What causes a song to have universal appeal? Singer/Songwriter Cat Stevens answered this question in 1970 with his masterpiece "Father and Son". Originally written for a project depicting a Russian son's desire to join the Revolution against his father's wishes, the song became known as the anthem of a generation in its depiction of the age-old struggle between a parent and their adolescent child.

Do You Miss the Fun 50's Music?
In his classic pop-rock anthem "American Pie," Don McLean bemoaned the loss of innocence that came with the death of his musical hero, Buddy Holly, a man emblematic of a decade of fun, frothy songs. When one thinks of 50's music today, it is not lyrical depth or complex harmonic patterns that come to mind. Instead, this was a simpler brand of music for a time of security and optimism. In this period well after the end of World War II and before Vietnam, the 50's music reflected the peace of mind of the population.
