Does Your Used CD Shop Give You an iPad for Your Collection?

July 23rd, 2010

Do you know that there is such a thing as a used CD shop? You probably have considered taking your CD collection out to them for some spare cash; and you would have too, if only they weren’t so cheap for what they give you for your precious music. There really is no point hanging onto CDs anymore some say; they just take up too much room. And how do you listen to them through the course of the day - carry a fat Discman with you when you could compress it all down to a sliver of an iPod? Speaking of iPods, here’s a grand alternative to the used CD shop - a company called iPodMeister, whose business model is so attractive, you could be forgiven for wondering if it was a scam.

Here’s the deal then - let’s say you have your eye on a shiny new Apple product - an iPod or one of those iPads that everyone keeps dreaming about these days. If you can’t come up with the asking price on your own and you’d need a little help, all you need to do is to barter your shoe boxes full of CDs that you last heard in the last millennium, for the Apple device of your choice. The iPodMeister idea was the brainchild of a bunch of struggling musicians. They found out that people in poorer countries couldn’t really afford to buy CDs at the prices they sold for; and they would really appreciate it if they could get their hands on some great classics on the cheap. They found out that all they had to do was first sidetrack a little of your business with the standard used CD shop down the street, take up your collection themselves and sell them overseas. They made a tidy profit, much better than anything their music ever put their way. Before you try the ransack your collection for that elusive iPad though, you do need to know that they have some pretty tight eligibility criteria.

They aren’t very particular what CDs you have (unless they are one penny CDs or foreign language stuff), but they do need to know that you have the CD in its original box, with its original liner notes. And oh, it can’t be a copy. They’ll take DVDs as well, but they are really particular that there be no serious scratches. So how much do you have to dig around in your collection to make that shiny new Apple device you want? They certainly don’t do business on very favorable terms - depending on the model of apple device you want, you’ll need to put down anything between 600 to 1000 CDs or DVDs, to get an iPad. If you want to rip your music before you send everything in, just in case you change your mind about listening to that old Duke Ellington CD for the 10,000th time, they’ll rip the whole set for you, if you’ll give them an extra 200 CDs. This actually works out to be a better deal than going to the used CD shop. However, if you would list your swag over at eBay, you could probably do ten times better.

New Blues CD by G Carter Is Out

June 7th, 2010

There isn’t anything more that I enjoy at the end of a hard day than to flop down in my lounge chair and listen to so smooth and relaxing music. No one is better at putting out soothing music than George Carter. His sounds of blues guitar backed by gentle strings and piano accompaniment isn’t an assault on the ears. His newest CD titled appropriately stop sweating the hard stuff is in my opinion his best yet.

The next time you want something easy to listen to, pick up Georges new CD.

Metal CDs Are Still Big Sellers

May 30th, 2010

When I was a youngster, my family and I would got to a place called Trader’s Village about once a month and shop for a variety of things: house decorations, appliances and pretty much everything else under the sun. My favorite reason to go there was because of the large collection of heavy metal CDs this one little store always seemed to have.

I never will forget that the first of the many metal CDs I ever bought was Metallica’s “And Justice for All.” I loved that album, and I would listen to it over and over again, as I did when I had first bought the album on cassette. The beautiful part about having it on a compact disc was that I never had to worry about it wearing out.

I went on to purchase several more metal CDs by Metallica, along with Guns n’ Roses, Pantera, Anthrax and several other bands, but as time went by and tastes in music changed, it appeared that heavy metal seemed to lose some steam in popularity.

I would hear about the hottest new pop sensation or hip hop artist, but rarely about heavy metal, unless of course, it was one of those bands I had listened to, especially Metallica.

I went to a music store the other day, however, and I saw the heavy metal section was full of metal CDs of bands of which I had never even heard. From what some of the younger people standing around were saying, though, metal CDs are still pretty popular.

I began talking to them and asking them about heavy metal and whether they liked it, and they said they did and most of their friends were into it, as well. I started mentioning some of my metal CDs, and while they said they respected those bands for getting things started, they were a bit too “old school” for their taste.

I then went over and talked to the store owner, and he told me that he regularly had people buy metal CDs and said he actually would have to say that it was one of the stores’ more popular sections. I don’t know if it was just a matter of me being out of touch, but I have to say that I left the store quite surprised.

It makes me feel good to know that metal CDs are still big sellers and that heavy metal itself is alive and well with a strong following among the listening public. It was a major part of my childhood and teenage years and something I look back on with great joy, and I hope that it will continue on for years and years to come.

The Last Classical Music CD I Ever Bought

April 9th, 2010

About Classical Music CD

My favorite kind of music is classical, and I was in a jovial mood, so I said that I was looking for a classical music CD that included Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. I was expecting a surprised or dumbfounded expression, but the associate smiled again and said, “Right this way.”

He walked me over to a section that had a rather sizable classical music selection and that included three different CDs with all six of the Brandenburg Concertos. Now I was the one with the surprised and dumbfounded expression.

I had not bought a classical music CD in months, and New Orleans, the jazz and blues capital of America, was the last place I expected to find what has become one of my favorite recordings. I began to wonder what else the store may have had that would be worth purchasing, so I continued to look.

The Last Classical Music CD I Ever Bought

March 18th, 2010

When I visited New Orleans a few years ago, I headed down to a music store in the French Quarter with my aunt and uncle, who are both big jazz fans. We were all perusing the various genres of music when a sales associate approached me.

“Can I help you find something?” he asked with a smile.

Now, my favorite kind of music is classical, and I was in a jovial mood, so I said that I was looking for a classical music CD that included Johann Sebastian Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos.

I found a copy of Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Seventh, Eight and Ninth Symphonies, and an assortment of other pieces that I knew and loved. Many of them I already owned, but some I did not.

I eventually found so many other interesting classical music CDs that I put the Brandenburg Concertos back and bought several of the others. When I returned home, I was quite contented with my haul, but wondered why I decided not to buy that one classical music CD.

Last year, I made another trip down to the Big Easy and the first place that I went was to that little music store down in the French Quarter, just to see if that one particular classical music CD might miraculously still be there.

Sure enough, there was the CD, in the exact same place, with the same composer and orchestra. I wondered if anyone had even touched it since I’d picked it up a few years ago.

This time, I went ahead and bought it, and I actually felt a great sense of closure as I left the store. My aunt and uncle were very happy for me, though they thought it was strange that I had left it in the store in the first place, and we returned home after a great day of sight-seeing.

The Brandenburg Concertos was the last classical music CD I ever bought, thanks to such innovations as iTunes, but it was quite an experience to find such a good classical music selection in that shop in the French Quarter. The CD itself is still one of better ones I have.

You Can Record from CD to the Cheapest Mp3 Player

January 21st, 2010

For the longest time I used to record to cd’s using my Yamaha p85 digital piano. I had a stand alone cd player recorder or I would use recording software first to be able to edit. Then I would burn my cd’s and have fun listening in my boom box or car.

Then came along mp3 technology and I was a little slow in jumping over because the fidelity was better with my cd’s. Well that is no longer, these days even with the cheapest mp3 player, I am able to get fantastic fidelity when recording.

I still make cd recordings for situations where there is no mp3 player to listen on but most of the time I’m using mp3 technology for my music.

What I really love is the ability to stack the songs inside my mp3 unit instead of changing one cd at a time. So what I’m doing a lot now is converting my cd’s to mp3 files.

The good news is windows media player will do this with the latest version. You don’t even have to buy conversion software.

If you don’t want to use windows software then just google cd to mp3 conversion and you will find all kinds of software, free and paid.

Jazz the Forbidden Music

November 8th, 2008

There was a time in history when Jazz the music was banned during World War II when it was considered a plight for freedom against Hitler’s Nazi regime due to what it represents. Jazz music is the product of America that was creatively invented by African American from culture, and all the elements of the American life that influenced this style of music.

Jazz music is a symbol of freedom, hope and the ability of express ones self in through one of best art forms which is music. Finding Artistry Of Movie Soundtracks

June 13th, 2008

It was pretty ambient and meant to set a frightening and alien mood, but somehow it was even more powerful when it was by itself. If I had been watching the movie at the time, I doubt I would have really registered it very much. I would’ve just watched the movie as a whole. But listening to it on its own, I can truly understand its artistry.

After listening to that, I went online and looked up a list of movie soundtracks. I discovered that there was a lot of variety in the type of music used in movies. Usually, it comes in one of two varieties. Some movies use actual songs peppered with incidental moments as their soundtracks. In other movies, the soundtrack is more of a score.

Celine Dion

June 4th, 2008

Talented Pop artist Celine Dion
has released her latest CD on the Epic recording label, entitled New Day Has Come.
Celine Dion has been a super star in the Pop genre for quite a while now and New Day Has Come is an excellent illustration as to why.
One of the nicer things about a CD like this is when the talent is this rich even if Pop isn’t your favorite style you still can’t help but appreciate the greatness of the artist.

Western Iowa tourism increasing due to music production

February 21st, 2008

It seems that the western Iowa tourism region lines up almost exactly with the region where most of the music in Iowa is recorded. This area of the state is full of local talent and there are many in home recording studios here. The tourism board did a survey of the artists in the area and put out a pamphlet showing where tourists could go to see performances live along with where to go to learn more about the recording industry in Iowa. It seems many of the artists in the area were not aware of other artists there and with this new information many have gotten together to collaborate on different projects. Many have even started putting out duet CDs recorded in the basement studio. These CDs are starting to show up for sale in local establishments. As the sales for these increase so does the demand for the artists to perform an the local venues. This is spurring quite an increase in the appreciation of not only music, but all of the performing arts in the area. This place is getting to be the hot spot of the state to go to hear all kinds of music from country western to hip hop.
