How to Tune Your Drums

October 5th, 2011

If you are a drummer then you need to know how to tune your drums properly. Even a great drum kit can sound bad if it is not tuned properly!

First thing to do is to loosen all the lugs on the drum until they are finger tight. If the drum has 2 heads then start with the top one. Now start to tighten the head gradually using your drum key. Once you have tightened one lug move to the lug opposite that one. In other words, if you start with a lug at 6 o’clock position do the lug at the 12 o’clock position next. Only tighten each lug a quarter turn each time. As you do this keep testing the pitch and sound of the drum by hitting it in the centre of the drum head.

Once you have the pitch that you require stop tightening the lugs. Then tap the drum head close to each lug in turn to see if the pitch and tone are the same. If they are slightly different then gently tighten or loosen that lug until the pitch and the tone are the same all round the drum.

Obviously the tigher the drum head, the higher the pitch of the resulting sound. Tune the bottom head to the same pitch as the top head in the same manner as outlined above.

Carry out the above procedure for all the drums in your kit. Once you know how to tune drums and have this routine worked out it will not take you long to tune your drums in the future.

The Best Way Of Learning To Play The Drums

September 13th, 2011

Are you thinking about becoming the next Ringo Starr? In comparison with mastering a musical instrument such as the violin, the drums may appear to be a lot easier to learn on the face of it. However drummers need to have exceptional hand coordination, which typically only comes with hours and hours of practice.

Why is it so hard to learn? Because you have to train your hands to be able to drum independantly, each hand has to move in different directions at the same time at different speeds.

By far the very best way of learning the drums, at least at first, would be to get some lessons from a skilled teacher who can teach you the basic techniques. Why is this the best method? Merely because they are able to actually observe you and thus counsel you as to what you are doing correct and what you are doing incorrectly. When you educate your self online or with dvd you really are unaware of what you are performing wrongly.

If you want to understand more about the craft of drumming, come and check out our Drum Lessons Gloucester website where you can learn much more about our instruction and expertise.
Make no mistake, learning to drum is hard work and
requires countless hours of repeated training, but as soon as you have perfected the techniques, you’ll enjoy your new found skills for the rest of your lifetime!

70s Music Hits are Unique in Modern Era

September 2nd, 2010

As a man born in the 1970s, I didn’t have much experience with 70s music hits when they first came out, because I was just a baby or small child. I have always looked back on the music of the 70s with fondness, however, because there were great rock n’ roll songs, but it was also the era of disco music and the era that saw the birth of heavy metal.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not a huge fan of disco music, but I do think that it has an interesting sound, and I am a huge fan of heavy metal. It is generally acknowledged that such bands as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were the originators of this particular brand of music, and that it was started in the 1970′s.

In terms of actual 70s music hits from the heavy metal genre of music, the first one that comes to mind for me is Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man.” With the intense guitar riffs and Ozzy Osbourne belting out those lyrics, how could you not fall in love?

Oddly enough, the first song that comes to mind when I think about 70s music hits is not from heavy metal or disco. It was a from a one-hit wonder group called Player, and the song was “Baby Come Back.”

The reason that this is always the first song that comes to mind when I think about hits from the decade of the 1970s is because I was once sent a link to a web site that told you what song was number one on the Billboard charts on the day you were born.

“Baby Come Back” was that song for me, and I believe that it was the only song the group Player ever had that reached number one on the Billboard charts, interestingly enough.

Disco is usually the most recognized music of the 70s, and most people that I have met either really liked it or really hated it. One thing is for certain, though, while it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between certain styles of music, nobody would ever confuse a disco song with anything else.

The 1970s is also the decade associated with the emergence of Outlaw Country, with such performers as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, David Allan Coe and Billy Joe Shaver. One of my favorite albums from this era was Willie Nelson’s “Red Headed Stranger” in 1975. It had two 70s music hits, including “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.”

I guess what I love the most about the decade’s music was that it typically made you feel pretty good. Lyrics were usually meaningful, and the music itself was empowering, and it was not just the 70s music hits that made you feel that way; it was most of the music from that decade.

Tequila Worms Play Surf Museum

June 23rd, 2010

There is a first time for everything and it is hard to believe but the Tequila Worms just played the surf museum for the first time. Due to odd weather, instead of playing outdoors, they were moved inside. Now those of you who know this surf band, know how loud they are. It is one of the negatives I have against this band.

It is always a bit warm in the museum but this day was exceptional with so many people crammed into this small landmark. You could see the facial sweating of the popular drummer Travis as his famous 100mph drumming wowed the crowd.

It is rumored the next museum gig for the Tequilas might be in August. If you are anywhere near Huntington Beach at that time, you will not regret catching this rising surf band.

Drumming Lesson

April 28th, 2009

An article about: Drumming Lesson

I played in band growing up, and let me tell you, the percussion that you learn in band is alright, but it isn’t really enough to get you far. You won’t learn enough to find your way around a kit unless you begin with a drum lesson outside of school. Otherwise, you’ll learn stick control, fundamentals, and nothing else, and that won’t get you anywhere.

Popular music is music belonging to any of a number of musical styles that are accessible to the general public and are disseminated by one or more of the mass media. It stands in contrast to art music,[ which historically was the music of the elite and upper strata of society, and traditional music which was disseminated orally. It is sometimes abbreviated to pop music, although pop music is more often taken as meaning the genre of pop, rather than popular music as a whole.

If Drums Are Your Musical Instrument Of Choice, Start Small

December 20th, 2006

You’ve seen those rock drummers on stage and in videos. Their impressive array includes a half a dozen cymbals or more, at least that many toms, maybe a double base, and perhaps some things you’ve never seen before. How in the world did they learn to incorporate all those musical instruments into their playing? The answer is simple, they started small.

Quick Tips To Incorporating Basic Polyrhythms Into Your Drum Set Playing Today
What is a polyrhythm? Well, "poly" means "many" and "rhythm" means "rhythm" (duh!), therefore, the word polyrhythm literally means "many rhythms". So, if we want to execute a polyrhythm, that means that we'll be playing multiple rhythms at the same time. Now this could refer to a wide variety of things, for example, any drum set groove that requires more than 2 limbs is technically, by definition, a polyrhythm. This however, is not what is generally meant by the term.

Why You Should Use iTunes Organizer Software
It is now possible to have hundreds of gigabytes of music stored on your PC and mp3 player. This translates to thousands of music titles. The only problem with this is that your computer or media player can't tell whether or not these titles are duplicated or corrupted files.
