MTV music videos

May 18th, 2011

When I was a teenager, it required a great deal to remove me away from watching MTV music videos. I adored music, and I couldn’t get enough of the flashy videos and the larger than life musicians that populated them. As time proceeded though, it became increasingly more obvious that though the M in MTV stood for music, it wasn’t really their primary emphasis. Before long, I watched much less music, and much more and more game shows. I can’t even watch the channel nowadays, although I realize that I am now out of their targeted age bracket.

These days, MTV music is not want it had been, if you’re able to still find it at all. Their schedule is stuffed with reality shows and specials, and finding music videos is difficult to carry out. More painful, the MTV music these days appears to be simply noise, though I suppose that just tends to make myself aged right? The majority of it I would not even label as music, but I realize that this is simply my opinion. I understand that those who are younger than me appreciate it; it’s simply certainly not for me personally.

I haven’t thought a lot about MTV music videos in a quite a while, but I have begun to consider it again. My daughter is getting older and even though I despise the thought of it, I know she’s going to grow out of groups like the Wiggles quickly enough, and she will probably be listening to music that is manufactured for teens. What frightens me is that I can’t find any MTV music videos that I would would like her watching. I suppose you could call me over protective, but I think kids are maturing way too quickly, and I want her to savor the freedom of childhood for as long as she can before she is mindful of things such as sex and attempting to act and look more mature.

The content of most of the MTV music videos makes my skin creep. Women have come a long way in the past decades, yet you would never know it by viewing a few of these videos. Self respect appears to have flown out the window, but to be fair, this has been the situation with most of the MTV music videos which have come and gone before. I reckon that it simply appears to be getting even worse, and the depravity appears to have become more serious. I don’t want her identifying with these women. I understand I can not keep her from viewing it eternally, but I really hope I’m able to hold her off long enough to point out to her how a real woman should live. What exactly is Alternative Rock?

September 8th, 2010

“I am not sure exactly what it is. It strikes a middle ground between heavy metal and pop”, explained a 19-year old youth. Yes, despite alternative rock having a wide appeal among the youth, this type of music is relatively new. However, what has made this type of music so popular? As one youth put it, it seems to ‘relate to different problems and experiences that we young people encounter’. Admittedly, it can be hard to tear away from a form of music that seems to speak directly to your emotions. While it disturbs some adults and with little or no idea what alternative rock is, let us take a look at this form of music.

Alternative rock cannot easily be explained. Originally, it was the kind of music for the youths who wanted to be different. As the name suggests, it was an alternative form of music to the mainstream music common on radio. Some say that this form of music had its roots when local college radio stations gave airtime to virtually unknown bands. The songs themselves were also different in content. While rap and heavy metal music cover more or less the same content, alternative rock is about harder feelings. It covers a wide variety of sounds, feelings and moods. It is hard to classify exactly that it covers. What about the beat? Again, this can be described in one word – alternative. The beat is neither hard or soft, fast or slow. One youth even said that he is not sure if likes alternative rock, because he does not even know what it is.

For many people, music is simply a matter of going after the crowd. For others however, it is the sound and the message that makes it so appealing. A lot of people seem to identify with songwriters feelings and experiences. Such feelings as despair, confusion and lust are common among the youth and alternative rock becomes a sort of an emotional sound track that speaks about them. However, despite the seemingly harmless nature of alternative rock, some bands show clear lack of balance. Some alternative forms of music can bring feelings of anger, depression and rebelliousness. Others have lyrics that identify not only the thoughts of the musicians, but also their lifestyles. All of these elements of the music can help to identify what genre the music belongs to. Even with alternative rock, remember to be selective with what you listen to.

Alternative Rock’s Greatest Hits

June 29th, 2010

Sometime in the early 80s a genre called Modern Rock was born. It evolved along the way to what we now know as Alternative Rock. Some stations call it Adult Alternative and that encompasses slower material usually or mid tempo songs. The real alternative rock stations are ones like K-ROC in Los Angeles, or 105.3 KITS in San Francisco and they play songs from such bands as Weezer, Green Day, System of a Down, Rise Against, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and many others. These are the types of songs and music that appeal to today’s younger listeners but it is definitely not an exclusive relationship. More and more baby boomers and older adults are tuning into this music, some for the first time since being stuck on Classic Rock for many years, and finding that the serious nature of the music and the quality of the songs and melodies appeal to them. This music is not that far removed from the Classic Rock that they grew up with but with a fresh twist that draws people in once they get past the initial rejection.

I have heard many of my older baby boomer generation friends say that they just don’t have time to listen to anything new. These people are just making excuses because they still have time to listen to the old stuff. They drive around all day listening to the greatest hits by the Eagles, the Who, Led Zepellin, CCR, the Beatles, or the Rolling Stones. They love these old familiar favorites because like home cooking, they provide comfort. Trying something new requires a little patience and you need to risk some of your precious time. But the rewards of listening to some of the great new artists that are out there right now, making their own greatest hits as they go, is the discovery of new music and the making of new memories.

We love old familiar Classic Rock songs and greatest hits compilations because these songs are forever linked in our memories and minds with wonderful experiences of growing up and falling in love and maybe even having kids. Listening to new music can help you to make new connections and give you fresh insights and memories that will last for years to come.

Listen to the Alternative Rock stations for a little bit each day. Discover what the young people already know, that there are some fantastic bands out there creating wonderful new greatest hits of rock and roll that will stand up with the best of all time. Bands like Kaiser Chief, the Bravery, Finger Eleven, Foo Fighters, Silversun Pickups, MGMT, and many others are recording some wonderful music that is not to be missed.

Greatest hits are being made right now by wonderful alternative bands and once you have listened to them and their great new music, you will be hooked forever. So go ahead, take a chance and risk a few hours of your time. What do you have to lose?

Classic Rock Songs that Stand the Test of Time

June 23rd, 2010

Everyone has their favorite classic rock songs and it usually has to do with what they were doing at the time when they first heard it. If you were experiencing your first kiss with Suzie Q. and Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” was blasting in your dad’s Plymouth as you leaned over, chances are that every time you hear that song for the rest of your life you will get a cheap thrill. Music and music memory are tied to our emotions and our life experiences in deep, unknown ways that psychologists have been trying to decipher for a long time. Our subconscious is a strange and complex place and for some reason music seems to stir passions and energies that we never even knew existed.

Sometimes the reaction to certain songs is not love, lust, or romance, but annoyance, irritation, or hatred. I myself for some reason cannot abide any songs by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush. It is not so much the songs themselves that I can’t stand, but the high, reedy, whining voice of their lead singer Getty Lee. Yet many of my friends swear by Rush and think that I am off my rocker.

In comparison, I love many of the classic rock songs by another Canadian, Neil Young, and I have been surprised by the vehemence of negative emotions that this name conjures up with some of my less enlightened associates. Suffice to say that Neil Young is no friend of white Southerners, especially after his pointed attack on them in the classic rock songs “Alabama” and “Southern Man” (one obviously was not enough for Neil). When Lynrd Skynrd made “Sweet Home Alabama” and mentioned “We heard old Neil sing about her, I heard old Neil put her down. We hope Neil Young will remember, Southern man don’t need him around anyhow,” this incited a fresh round of racist flag waving.

This whole thing with Neil Young is very strange since Neil basically made his living playing acoustic, harmonica-tinged Southern rock with classic albums like “Harvest”, “Harvest Moon” and many others. Neil also contributed many classic rock songs that endure to this day as some of the very finest ever written. Classic rock songs like “Harvest Moon”, “Southern Man”, “Heart of Gold”, “Old Man”, “Needle and the Damage Done”, and “Rockin’ in the Free World” are all examples of country music mixed with rock and roll.

Classic rock songs have a way of stirring up emotions that you just don’t get in any other genre of music, in my opinion. Take for example one of the greatest classic rock songs of all time, “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zepellin. It was voted as the greatest song ever written and yet continues to be bashed by people saying that it has been overplayed to death. In the hit comedy movie “Wayne’s World” there is a sign on the wall at the Guitar Center that reads “No Playing Stairway to Heaven”. In Hermosa Beach, California, at the great blues and rock club, Café Boogaloo, there is a sign on the wall that reads “No Mustang Sally” which always struck me as hilarious since “Mustang Sally” is not a bad song. After hearing every two bit jam band play that song to the ground I realized that maybe not playing it was a good thing.

The Classic Rock Cover Band Experience

May 16th, 2010

Most people who dream of becoming a musician do not start out wanting to be in a cover band. When you are young and full of hope you truly believe that you will become “The Next Big Thing” and that you will record many albums and become a household name. The reality is that most musicians never make any real money and spend good chunks of their life pursuing a dream that will never materialize. Many of these musicians end up turning to the classic rock cover band as a way to continue to play music and make a few bucks in the meantime. There is a great tradition in the classic rock cover band annals and there are many great musicians now playing in these types of popular local groups. Bars and nightclubs across the country and across the world rely on the classic rock cover band as their main source of entertainment and a way to draw in revenue from aficionados and people who just love to dance to the oldies.

The classic rock cover band will typically play songs like “Brown Sugar” or “Honky Tonk Women” by the Rolling Stones or “Rock and Roll” and “Dancing Days” by Led Zepellin. The classic rock cover singer needs to have a tremendous range in order to be able to successfully and convincingly sing all of the classic rock songs that were made famous by great artists back in the sixties and seventies. A typical set list might include such diverse songs as “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen followed by “Some Kind of Wonderful” by Grand Funk Railroad.

The classic rock ballad is very important and many of the best cover bands will feature these sexy slow songs to get people dancing cheek to cheek. Some of the classic rock ballad favorites include “Let’s Get it On” by Marvin Gay and “One” by U2. “Standing on the Dock of the Bay” is another great crooner song from Otis Redding that can be heard at many clubs on a Friday or Saturday night.

Most really good cover bands want to keep the patrons on the dance floor and dancing. Dancing patrons will normally drink a lot more than non-dancing ones and that is good news for the club owner and the band too, especially if the band gets a percentage of the bar receipts at the end of the night. Typically a bar owner will hedge his bet by offering the band a portion of the bar revenue, usually no more than 20 to 25%. The band needs to have a little faith that the bar owner will not rip them off so there is a little bit of the honor system going on at most places.

Some fantastic musicians can be seen at most clubs at major cities on any weekend night. The really good bands can play one or two gigs per week on a regular basis. On weekends many of the top bands will get higher paying shows as Wedding Bands or playing corporate parties or events such as festivals.

The classic rock experience can be a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work and should not be undertaken lightly. Make sure that this is what you really want to do because it will suck up a lot of your free time. That being said, playing in a cover band can be a very rewarding experience and you will make a lot of good friends and meet some very interesting people on the way. Enjoy the ride!

The Greatest American Rock Bands of All Time

May 11th, 2010

Most of the greatest American rock bands of all time were to be found in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, though that may be too limiting for a complete listing. Great American rock music began in the 50s with Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, and Chuck Berry. Rockers like Richie Valens and Jerry Lee Lewis grew from the ripe musical spawning ground of southern blues music. Great blues artists such as Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf are many times mentioned by these rock artists as their heroes and an inspiration to them for starting their careers.

When the 60s began, Elvis ruled the airwaves until the Beatles arrived from England and took the U.S. by storm. Although the media dubbed it the “British Invasion” there were still plenty of great American rock artists at the same time such as the Beach Boys, the Animals, Buffalo Springfield, and many others.

The late 60s brought us such great American rock stars as Janis Joplin, Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Canned Heat, Mountain, Jim Morrison and the Doors, and many others.

There were always great concerts to go to, especially in the big cities and on both coasts. San Francisco had the Fillmore West with the world’s greatest rock promoter Bill Graham, who eventually brought over all the greatest rock bands not only from the U.S. but from all over the world. Los Angeles had smaller venues such as the Whiskey-a-Go-Go where bands like the Doors got their start.

Later on other fantastic American rock acts such as Lynrd Skynrd, The Eagles, America, the Allman Brothers, and the Doobie Brothers would come on the scene and shake up the world with their string of hit songs.

In the 90s came the rise of bands like the Black Crowes, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, the Beastie Boys, R.E.M. and many others. The late 90s brought us the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Today’s music scene features many up and coming and fully established American rock bands such as Kings of Leon, Interpol, Pearl Jam (still rocking), Green Day, Counting Crows, and Weezer. Also mixing it up are the Silversun Pickups, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Dandy Warhols, Spoon, and the Foo Fighters featuring Dave Grohl formerly of Nirvana fame.

Many years ago the Los Angeles Times announced boldly that “Rock Is Dead” but it is still going strong. As long as there are rebellious American teenagers willing to steal daddy’s car and go for a joyride there will be American rock bands. Americans love their rock music like they love their football or their Harley Davidsons. Just go to any local bar or nightclub on any given weekend and you will see that American rock bands are alive and well and rocking the house from sea to shining sea.

10 of the Top 50 Rock Songs of All Time

April 18th, 2010

Everyone has a valid opinion on this subject and very few people if asked will refrain from responding. Rock music has so permeated the fabric of our beings that they become impossible to separate from our experience. Why a person would pick one song over another of the top 50 rock songs of all time is purely dependent on where they were and what they were doing when they first heard that song. Our nostalgia for past events in our life is inextricably intertwined with the songs that make up our life’s soundtrack.

I hereby propose the following list (unapologetically) of my very own for the 10 best of the top 50 rock songs of all time.

10. American Pie by Don McLean. Released in 1971 this is another one of the top 50 rock songs that everybody was singing when it first came out. This was one of the first times in history when over-saturation because of excessive radio play could not make you hate a song. To this day this is one of the most requested and played songs on classic rock radio formats.

9. Layla by Derek and the Dominoes from 1970. We just had never heard something so majestic as the multi-layered Layla when it first hit AM radio. Clapton proved he was the best guitar gunslinger in the world with the soaring sounds of this fantastic song.

8. Maggie May by Rod Stewart was a bittersweet melody that we all remember as being integrally mixed in with where we were when we first heard it. Whether it was at a high school dance with your first sweetheart or taking your first road trip with your pals, this song is similar to many others in the top 50 rock songs of all time in that it is unforgettable.

7. Proud Mary by Credence Clearwater Revival. Recorded in 1969 by John Fogerty and company, this song transcended rock and roll and became a symbol of our country’s music around the world.

6. Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf from 1968 ushered in an era of black lights and glow in the dark posters. This Fillmore West favorite band also hit the jackpot with Born to be Wild off the same album.

5. Me and Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin. Drinking Wild Turkey straight from the bottle and doing massive amounts of drugs eventually led to Janis’ demise, but this southern style rocker is still one of the most challenging female vocal tunes ever to be recorded.

4. Baba O’Riley by the Who. “It’s only teenage wasteland” screams Roger Daltrey in this hard driving rock classic, easily one of the top 50 rock songs of our lifetime.

3. Honky Tonk Woman by the Rolling Stones. Written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger purportedly while they were on vacation in Brazil, this song still makes people dance from the opening cowbell licks to the signature guitar riffs.

2. Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin by 1971. “No Playing Stairway to Heaven” was the sign at the Guitar Center in the movie Wayne’s World, but seriously, this song became the ultimate rock anthem. This song invented swaying crowds holding up lighters.

1. Hey Jude by the Beatles recorded in 1968 and released as a single on their Apple label. This is by far the greatest song ever recorded by the greatest band ever assembled (yes, even Ringo).

January 30th, 2009

On 21st February 2009 the German music award, the Echo, will take place at O2 World in Berlin for the 18th time. Since 1992 the award has been given for 24 categories every year.
As usual, this year there will be a lot of national and international celebrities from the music industry. U2 are going to present their new song “Get on your boots” live! Not only on stage but also in the audience there will be loads of famous people who have been nominated for the “famous” award. One of those will be Lenny Kravitz and Jack Johnson who are both nominated for the “Best international male rock artist”. Or Madonna and Amy Winehouse who are competing for the award in the category “Best international female pop artist”. Now we have to wait to see which of them will finally take the prestigious award home.
The actress and singer Barbara Schöneberger as well as the comedian and presenter Oliver Pocher will present Echo this year.
The German Phono academy organises the show every year and the winner of the Echo is based on the music charts. The best national live act is voted online so everyone can participate. A special panel of judges decides who gets the awards for the life’s work and the special price.

This echo award is for artists representing rock/pop and folk music but every year in autumn there is the classic Echo which is for classic artists only. Since 2001 the Pop- Echo takes place in Berlin every year but the location for the Classic-Echo changes every year.
Tickets are available starting from 49 Euros (standing). Have a look on the official homepage echopop.de to see where you can buy the tickets. There you can also find more nominees in other categories.

If you want to see the Echo and all the celebrities live you should have a look for tickets soon since a lot of people want to see the event. You should also have a look for an Unterkunft Berlin soon. If you are looking for a Hotel Berlin you should hurry up since they are booked out quickly in Berlin. Do not forget that Berlin is a famous destination for tourists! You could also have a look for a Ferienwohnung in Berlin which might be an even cheaper alternative to a hotel. An apartment is also bigger than a hotel room so you and your travel partners have much more space!

Robert Allen Zimmerman

June 4th, 2008

Robert Allen Zimmerman
was born May 24th 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota. His father, Abe, was employed by the Standard Oil Company there, but when Robert was six the family moved to Hibbing, Minnesota. The one riddling note about Hibbing is that is very often the coldest place in the United States. Yikes. Growing up there he taught himself piano and guitar and formed several high school rock bands. Around this time he toyed with the stage name, “Elston Gunn”.

Hound Dog – Is It The Best Of Elvis Presley Greatest Hits Or Most Controversial?

May 22nd, 2008
One of the Elvis Presley greatest hits that became very popular even before it was formally recorded was a song named Hound Dog. “Hound Dog” was actually on the flip side of what many considered Elvis Presley’s greatest hit and most successful single “Don’t Be Cruel”, with both sides spending 11 weeks at the top of the charts. Elvis Presley became controversial over the gyrating hip movements he did while singing “Hound Dog” during appearances on several different shows. Those gyrating hip movements would become his trademark even though they initially caused such a firestorm of controversy.

How to promote a concert

May 20th, 2008

Have you been kind enough to offer your help but now are struggling to know just how to promote a concert?

It’s not that difficult once you apply yourself to the task and really, everything is just common sense. It’s just that you haven’t had to consider it before!

Firstly, time and timing is very important.

Treble check the date of the concert so that there’s no confusion there. (It has happened) Then make sure that any publicity is printed and ready to be displayed in plenty of time. This allows for hold-ups at printers, weekends, bank holidays etc.

You want a good return on ticket sales so don’t leave publicising the event till the last minute. Things like” book now to avoid disappointment” and “when they’re gone they’re gone” are good stock phrases to use.

The design of any posters, flyers or leaflets that you create is vitally important. They have to meet the A.I.D.A criteria. Not sure what that is?

A=attention
I=interest
D=desire
A=action

Basically, the design needs to be good enough/bright enough/unusual enough to attract everyone’s attention. But especially the attention of your target audience.

Some research into what’s grabbing that particular age group’s attention would be a good idea when it comes to promoting a concert.

There should definitely be something of interest in the flyer etc too. Not just a blatant advert. Add some interesting fact, an anniversary of something, the fact that this is a return by popular demand or similar.

Then you’ve got to make the audience want to come – the concert’s got to be unmissable. Why? Use your imagination because people act on their desire.

Finally, if all the above works, then your audience will decide to come because all that’s left for them to do is take action!

Be sure to get this promotional literature everywhere that the potential audience will see it, including the venue itself.

If you or some helpful volunteers are putting flyers out yourselves, it’s best to stick them at around eye level for maximum effect.

Get them in local shops, libraries, shop & café noticeboards, colleges, schools( if that’s the relevant age group), Uni’s, local government halls, council offices, village halls, supermarket & mall boards.

Like I say, any where and everywhere.

Obviously get a good deal on your printing costs if you’re really going for it & don’t worry if you sometimes have to compromise on quality as a ‘rough’ effect for some publicity flyers can have a good unusual effect.

I could go on as there are lots of angles to look at & this has just been a taster on how to promote a concert. But I hope it helps.

New Wave

April 17th, 2008

New Wave was the third form of music to develop on the indie scene, and like progressive rock it was quickly usurped and mutilated by labels, who would sign anyone with any connection to the true sound. This type of music was pretty much right in between punk and prog; experimental and edgy at the same time. In fact, some of the most influential artists in the New Wave
movement are still cited by label successes such as U2 today; Elvis Costello was known for his pointed lyrics, and Blondie was perhaps the most well-known band of this era.

Alternative Music

April 1st, 2008

Alternative Music embodies a different musical approach and an “anything but” philosophy to the status quo of rock and roll. This movement in music has existed in other forms through the years. Punk, for example, was arguably a precursor to what later developed as Alternative Music. The idea of Alternative Music is music and bands that are not in the mainstream. The genre of Alternative Music currently is hard to define. The wave that started in the early 90s has subsided and has left a lot of carbon copies in its aftermath.

Classic Rock May Never Die

January 12th, 2008

If I’m not mistaken, there is an old saying that says “rock n’ roll will never die, and although that sounds like a cliche, it may actually be true. Considering the popularity of “classic rock” these days, it certainly is not showing any signs of dying anytime soon. When I hear a classic rock ringtone coming from some teenager’s phone, I know there is hope for its future.

Despite the fact that much of the music we consider “classic” these days is from 20 or more years ago, a lot of young people seem to be flocking to classic rock. This does not surprise me given the quality of what is considered music these days.

I think the Internet has been a great help in introducing a lot of the older music to young people today. Let’s face it, you can get online and download just about any kind of music you can think of. I don’t doubt that in some cases, parents had a hand in introducing classic rock to their kids as well since that was certainly the case in my family.

However, since the Internet has made so many choices available, young people also has the opportunity to discover classic rock music on their own and perhaps feel more like it was their own and that bodes well for the future of classic rock.
