Making Good Music: How to Tune a Guitar

August 26th, 2010

It is absolutely essential for any aspiring pro guitarist or future rock star to learn how to tune a guitar. One of the most important prerequisites to creating awesome, tolerable music is making sure that you’re playing in tune. Music is called “music” for a reason—calling it such separates it from the uncivilized species of noise, discordance, and just about anything else you can think of that punishes the ears.

Give your audience a break. Learn how to tune a guitar. Using a tuner (aptly named) is usually the method of choice for getting a guitar in tune. Not having hit the big time just yet, you’ll probably find yourself on a budget. A cheap basic tuner will emit the correct E, A, D, G, B and E pitches, allowing you to adjust the pitch of your guitar strings according to an electronic authority. If you’re more of a perfectionist performer, you might spring for a slightly more sophisticated tuner with a needle that detects how far from perfect pitch you are. The idea is to get the needle to point directly in the middle: a needle straying left indicates that you¡¯re sounding flat, and a needle hanging out on the right reads sharp. Some fancier tuners will combine both pitch emission and a needle to ensure accuracy.

The above teaches you how to tune a guitar through more conventional means. Nowadays in the technological age you can find tuners online, and for free no less. But until technology provides pre-tuned cyberspace guitars at your disposal, you’ll probably have to figure out how to tune your guitar through old-fashioned real world techniques. That¡¯s how real rock stars do it.

Traversing the musical world or more domestically, your own social circle, you might be lucky enough to encounter a fascinating and rare oddity: the human pitchpipe. The more technical term for these individuals is “people who have perfect/absolute pitch.” They are blessed with the ability to recognize and produce pitch without external reference. When learning how to tune a guitar, perfect pitch people need only concern themselves with the physical mechanics of the guitar because they’ve got the rest of tuning covered.

The rest of us mere musical mortals are left to our own devices, but we have the option of consulting an expert. Perfect pitch people are like tuners you can have human interaction with, and most of them are only too happy to help the less fortunate; in doing so, they synthesize an ego-boost and a charitable deed into one. In any case, when utilizing the human pitchpipe, make sure to pick one that has plenty of patience and lung capacity.

Perfect pitch is almost always the focus of tuning, but there’s somewhat of a cheat around it. The most important aspect of tuning is the relation of pitches rather than the pitch itself. As long all pitches are in tune with each other, things will sound fine. Basically, when everyone is wrong to the same degree it becomes right. But if you’re going to make the effort anyway, you might as well try to be right in the first place.

Whichever route you take, remember that tune is of the utmost important and the key to making good music that people can listen to and appreciate. Practice makes perfect, but tune makes tolerable and sounding good.

Electric Violin: Not the New Electric Guitar

August 18th, 2010

Most notably publicized through Yellowcard’s Sean Mackin, the electric violin combines the classic sound of strumming strings with the power of rocking acoustics. The instrument is not unheard of, but it remains to be seen whether it will achieve as much mainstream acceptance as the electric guitar. Public reaction to the electric violin is varied. Some receive it with enthusiasm and fascination; others see it as an unnecessary gimmick.

Both viewpoints have their merits. On one hand, it makes sense to celebrate the fusion of different musical disciplines. Musical genres shouldn’t have to be so strictly segregated. On the other hand, the potential crossover of the classical violin to classic rock can open the door to any old instrument undergoing electrical engineering just for the novelty of it rather than aesthetic interest. Some might fear the possibility of these electronic instruments replacing their respective authentic ones.

As of now, skeptics have little reason to worry. The electric violin is rarely used in classical performance and mainly wanders about the realm of pop rock and other more mainstream genres of music. It may end up traveling the way of the guitar, in that classical and electric guitars are viewed as distinct instruments used for different purposes. Granted, electric guitars have a very different sound whereas an electric violin tends to sound m
ore similar to the original. Perhaps the electric violin, like the electric acoustic guitar, will fall somewhere along the line between the two domains. In any case, currently the electric violin hardly appears poised to establish itself as much as the electric guitar has, which is an interesting prospect to ponder.

It may simply be a matter of culture and time. Electric guitars conjure up the notion of rock and roll while violins are automatically associated with classical music. Electric violins are just that—electric violins. Electric guitars have had a lot more publicity, leading to more widespread exposure and acceptance. It’s entirely possible that after a decade or two, the idea of the violin as a rock instrument will be nothing absurd or out of the ordinary.

The public will inevitably dissent over whether this is something to be anticipated or feared. Diversity is to be encouraged, one side will say; mediocrity is not, the other side will counter. Should the violin be reduced to yet another instrument converted into modern fare purely out of base, even morbid enjoyment? Whether the electric violin will prove to be a creative advancement or just another technological stunt remains to be seen.

Choosing Your Acoustic Guitar

July 3rd, 2010

Before you even start playing, you have to pick out your acoustic guitar. This is a subject of some debate among guitar experts. Should you buy a beginner guitar, or should you go all out and get something more expensive? Many people believe that beginner guitars are the way to go. That way, if you don’t like playing, you haven’t wasted too much money. Other people believe that you shouldn’t confine yourself to cheap acoustic guitars. If you have the money, you should buy a really good ax. That way, it will be a joy to play. The better it sounds, the more you’re going to want to play it!

In my opinion, the best approach is a compromise. Whether you are getting acoustic electric guitars, nylon string classical guitars, or some other kind, it shouldn’t be the bottom-of-the-line. Get something that is decent, but not overly expensive. You can usually find acoustic guitars on sale for less than 200 dollars. Take someone who is experienced along to help you pick it out. Choosing the right guitar, after all, is crucial.

My dream of becoming the musicians choice

January 14th, 2010

I used to have a dream of becoming a professional musician, or more like the world’s most famous guitar player, winning MTV and musician choice awards. Well, it didn’t actually turn out that way.

Going to a music school in my home town I soon learned that I was a terrible musician. I couldn’t play the guitar at all, and I know my classmates were making fun of me behind my back. That hurt my feelings, because I really wanted my dream to come true. But with most dreams you wake up, and so did I. Fortunately, I found a different passion, and that passion was for singing.

Singing was something that was a lot easier for me than playing the guitar, and I have no idea why. Perhaps it was because of the technical nature of playing the guitar, perhaps I have voice chords of gold. Anyhow, I soon became the sing star of high school and found myself in a studio with the latest music recording software. This turned out to be one of several times I recorded in a studio, however, this dream too came to an end when grown up life put its chains on me.

It’s strange how some people make it in life and thousands do not. Living out your dream really takes courage, discipline, and the strength to go against the herd. Herd mentality is one of the biggest enemies of all accomplishments, so if you want to make a difference in life it is usually a good sign that walking the complete opposite way as everyone else.

Looking back at the time in a music recording studio, playing concerts in front of large crowds, and simply having fun with my band mates, I really miss it. It sure beats a desk job. So don’t follow in my tracks, or the tracks of all the other failed musicians out there. Stick to your dream, and perhaps you will some day receive a musicians choice award of the highest ranking kind.

November 25th, 2009

You love music and you want to pursue your interest in it, but where do you start? Understanding the basic fundamentals of music theory is important, but learning how to read sheet music is a must, whether you want to play a musical instrument for your own enjoyment, play in a group, or sing privately or publicly.

As you study the music score before you, you will need to learn three basic things: how to recognize the basic language of music, the notes, and the musical sounds they represent, and the timing symbols included in the music map. None of these are terribly difficult, but mastering them is essential to recreating or singing the piece they way it has been written.

You can go online to find courses that teach basic sight reading, which is the process of understanding the rhythm and sounds being described on a piece of sheet music. Of course, you can buy self-teaching manuals as well or find a music teacher who will teach you how to read sheet music. You will discover scales, clefs, stafs and rests.Once the basics are mastered, you can sight read music to sing to or to play with other instruments besides the piano.

The world of music is a wonderful place, full of opportunity for people of all abilities to find their own niche. Do not hesitate to search for your own.

What To Look For When Buying Vintage Guitars

July 21st, 2009

If you are a beginning guitar player, you may start out with a new and rather inexpensive model of guitar. That is how most start because they don’t have a lot of money, and they know there is a chance they won’t take the hobby too far. If they were to spend a lot on the guitar, they would be out all of that money. They may be able to resell, but they won’t get what they paid in many cases. However, those that have been playing for years and love it will be more willing to lay down some money to get what they want. Most will have a yen for vintage guitars at one point or another, but they do have to know what to look for in one.

Nevertheless, if you’re willing to buy second hand, you can do very well for yourself. You see, almost everyone wants to play guitar or bass at one point in their life. Fender Guitars: Tradition that Never Gets Old

November 7th, 2008

Peter Lenkefi has written a great article about the tradition of Fender guitars. Here’s a short excerpt:

Without a doubt, Fender guitars are the top-of-the-line in guitars. Success in business is often measured according to the amount of money and sales a company is able to secure. The success of the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation proves there are two other elements to consider: dedication and perseverance. From the beginning, it was company owner Leo Fender’s main goal to fender guitars the best as possible. The first fruits of his labor would prove positive his dedication He would reach his goal by designing the Telecaster, a solid-body electric guitar with a Spanish design. This guitar, like many Fender guitars that would follow, was the first of its kind. Only a few years after gaining fame with the Telecaster, Fender followed with the Precision Bass and Stratocaster. These Fender guitars are now collector’s items.

buy guitar online

October 2nd, 2008

I have bought many guitars online over the years. I studied Classical Guitar At The Crane School of Music, and played in various bands for the last 15 years or so. To Buy Guitar Online is to truly live on the edge. Really I would prefer to go to the store and play the very guitar I am buying, but sometimes, I have to order. For example, in 2001 I wanted this Parker Fly Classic (now called the mojo) with a certain natural finish I could not find in New York. I went online and eventually found the exact one I wanted in a small store in Tennessee (I forget the website lol) In general though, I would go to a local music store to play the guitar you are buying because the more expensive ones like Gibson, are all basically hand-made and can have different feels, flaws and bonuses, ESPECIALLY acoustic guitars. I really want the Martin D-35, but I would definitely go to a store and play 3 or 4 of them before choosing one, not just picking it out of a catalogue.

Love and Rainbow Kisses,

Nat
