70s Music Hits are Unique in Modern Era

September 2nd, 2010

As a man born in the 1970s, I didn’t have much experience with 70s music hits when they first came out, because I was just a baby or small child. I have always looked back on the music of the 70s with fondness, however, because there were great rock n’ roll songs, but it was also the era of disco music and the era that saw the birth of heavy metal.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not a huge fan of disco music, but I do think that it has an interesting sound, and I am a huge fan of heavy metal. It is generally acknowledged that such bands as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were the originators of this particular brand of music, and that it was started in the 1970’s.

In terms of actual 70s music hits from the heavy metal genre of music, the first one that comes to mind for me is Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man.” With the intense guitar riffs and Ozzy Osbourne belting out those lyrics, how could you not fall in love?

Oddly enough, the first song that comes to mind when I think about 70s music hits is not from heavy metal or disco. It was a from a one-hit wonder group called Player, and the song was “Baby Come Back.”

The reason that this is always the first song that comes to mind when I think about hits from the decade of the 1970s is because I was once sent a link to a web site that told you what song was number one on the Billboard charts on the day you were born.

“Baby Come Back” was that song for me, and I believe that it was the only song the group Player ever had that reached number one on the Billboard charts, interestingly enough.

Disco is usually the most recognized music of the 70s, and most people that I have met either really liked it or really hated it. One thing is for certain, though, while it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between certain styles of music, nobody would ever confuse a disco song with anything else.

The 1970s is also the decade associated with the emergence of Outlaw Country, with such performers as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, David Allan Coe and Billy Joe Shaver. One of my favorite albums from this era was Willie Nelson’s “Red Headed Stranger” in 1975. It had two 70s music hits, including “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.”

I guess what I love the most about the decade’s music was that it typically made you feel pretty good. Lyrics were usually meaningful, and the music itself was empowering, and it was not just the 70s music hits that made you feel that way; it was most of the music from that decade.

Creating Jazz Music

August 30th, 2010

Music artists promotion
All over the world people have invented their own interpretation of Jazz by creating new music from their soul, yet branching out to expand the capabilities of the music of their culture. Jazz around the world must always begin with examples of various music. The main traits of the styles of music that stands out consistently should be reviewed.

One must think about the aesthetic nature of the songs, and the general sound of that style. The next action to make is to add a trait or two to the traditional music of your culture. In all music there are notes that sound horrible when played together or just plain uninteresting.

Band Coaching

With research and experimentation one can find traits from many styles of music that could fit together perfectly. There you will have invented a new style of music by expanding your cultural music, or adding the ethnic trait to another style of music. One can always balance each trait evenly to make it difficult for anyone to point out anyone style to create a new style of mongrel music. Nevertheless, creating Jazz music is taking what is known and expanding it without abandoning the main core of the style.

Making Good Music: How to Tune a Guitar

August 19th, 2010

It is absolutely essential for any aspiring pro guitarist or future rock star to learn how to tune a guitar. One of the most important prerequisites to creating awesome, tolerable music is making sure that you’re playing in tune. Music is called “music” for a reason—calling it such separates it from the uncivilized species of noise, discordance, and just about anything else you can think of that punishes the ears.

Give your audience a break. Learn how to tune a guitar. Using a tuner (aptly named) is usually the method of choice for getting a guitar in tune. Not having hit the big time just yet, you’ll probably find yourself on a budget. A cheap basic tuner will emit the correct E, A, D, G, B and E pitches, allowing you to adjust the pitch of your guitar strings according to an electronic authority. If you’re more of a perfectionist performer, you might spring for a slightly more sophisticated tuner with a needle that detects how far from perfect pitch you are. The idea is to get the needle to point directly in the middle: a needle straying left indicates that you¡¯re sounding flat, and a needle hanging out on the right reads sharp. Some fancier tuners will combine both pitch emission and a needle to ensure accuracy.

The above teaches you how to tune a guitar through more conventional means. Nowadays in the technological age you can find tuners online, and for free no less. But until technology provides pre-tuned cyberspace guitars at your disposal, you’ll probably have to figure out how to tune your guitar through old-fashioned real world techniques. That¡¯s how real rock stars do it.

Traversing the musical world or more domestically, your own social circle, you might be lucky enough to encounter a fascinating and rare oddity: the human pitchpipe. The more technical term for these individuals is “people who have perfect/absolute pitch.” They are blessed with the ability to recognize and produce pitch without external reference. When learning how to tune a guitar, perfect pitch people need only concern themselves with the physical mechanics of the guitar because they’ve got the rest of tuning covered.

The rest of us mere musical mortals are left to our own devices, but we have the option of consulting an expert. Perfect pitch people are like tuners you can have human interaction with, and most of them are only too happy to help the less fortunate; in doing so, they synthesize an ego-boost and a charitable deed into one. In any case, when utilizing the human pitchpipe, make sure to pick one that has plenty of patience and lung capacity.

Perfect pitch is almost always the focus of tuning, but there’s somewhat of a cheat around it. The most important aspect of tuning is the relation of pitches rather than the pitch itself. As long all pitches are in tune with each other, things will sound fine. Basically, when everyone is wrong to the same degree it becomes right. But if you’re going to make the effort anyway, you might as well try to be right in the first place.

Whichever route you take, remember that tune is of the utmost important and the key to making good music that people can listen to and appreciate. Practice makes perfect, but tune makes tolerable and sounding good.

Dance Music Songs And The “Forbidden Genre”

July 4th, 2010

I recently found myself in an online argument with complete strangers over a list of the twenty five greatest songs of the “oughties.” Or whatever it is we’ve decided to call the decade that ran from the year 2000 to the year 2010. And yes, arguing online is like running in the special olympics - even if you win, you’re still retarded. But I just can’t help myself.

On my list of the top 25 songs of the decade I included two dance music songs: Kylie Minogues 2000 hit “Can’t get you out of my head” and Lady Gaga’s 2008 release “Poker Face.” While there were those who supported my selections, there was one person who was very, very much against including any dance music songs on any top 25 “best of” list for any reason.

And from my point of view, that’s kind of ridiculous thinking. Dance music songs tend not to be my favorites, and the genre itself has given rise to some pretty awful stuff as a whole, but that doesn’t mean that the genre can’t ever produce worthwhile music. And I think the two dance music songs I mentioned particularly illustrate that.

And the fact is, music critics tend to hate manufactured bands and dance music songs the most. The most frequent criticism thrown at them tends to be that they’re somehow faux; that the music they make, even if it is very good, somehow counts for less because it was not made for purely idealistic ends. I think this is blinkered hogwash.

After all, just think about it: Neither Bing Crosby nor Frank Sinatra wrote their own music. Neither did Billie Holliday or Ella Fitzgerald or Nat King Cole. Nobody was more manufactured than the singers of “standards” in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, yet those singers are almost uniformly venerated by the same critics that hate every manufactured band from the Monkees to the Jonas Brothers to points beyond. It’s an arbitrary and useless distinction on their part, one born of cultural attitudes moreso than any realistic assessment of the music that’s been produced by these acts.

So which dance music songs have really stood out for me besides the ones I already mentioned? Well, it depends upon what you consider dance music. For me, I’d throw the French grou Daft Punk into that genre even though others consider them “electronic music.” If you’re not counting them out, then virtually everything they’ve done over the years belongs on a list of the best dance music songs.

Cuban Music is Popular Around the World

June 21st, 2010

For such a small island, Cuba has asserted incredibly big influence over the music of many countries around the world. Long renowned for their great artists such as Tito Rodriguez, Celia Cruz, Ibrahim Ferrer, and many others, Cuban dance music has transcended popular music and crossed international and language barriers all around the planet.

Cuba is known for sultry women, great cigars, rum drinks, beautiful beaches, and fantastic music. The great American writer and adventurer Ernest Hemingway made Cuba his second home and was famous for drinking Mojitos, smoking Romeo and Julieta cigars, and sport fishing. He wrote his famous and wonderful “The Old Man and the Sea” during the time he lived here and could be found holding court at his favorite Havana bar, “La Bodeguita del Medio” (translated as the little store in the center). In the 1950s Havana was THE destination for chic socialites and movie stars. They would stay at the centrally located Hotel Nacional and it was required that you be seen at the Tropicana nightclub. The Tropicana was the most famous nightclub in all of Cuba and featured the very finest Cuban music and musicians, along with dozens of gorgeous dancers in typical clothing and outlandish costumes. The Tropicana was world famous for the quality of music and shows that were presented there nightly.

Cuban music came back on the scene in a big way in the late 90s with the release of “The Buena Vista Social Club” movie and CD. Featuring legendary Cuban musicians such as singer Ibrahim Ferrer, the Buena Vista Social Club became a huge international hit for the band and producer Ry Cooder, who was credited with discovering the group. Another great Cuban music band that has lasted over 40 years together is Los Van Van. Los Van Van won a Grammy Award about ten years ago and featured some of the greatest songs ever recorded. Their brand of music is generally called Salsa or Son Cubano and their leader Juan Formell has been hailed by many as a musical genius without equal.

Some of the other great Cuban groups of the last twenty to thirty years include Son 14 with the raspy, rum and cigar voice of their singer Tiburon (shark). Son 14 made many great records in the 80s and 90s, establishing themselves as one of the greatest Cuban music makers of all time.

Another fantastic and legendary band was NG La Banda which won fans all around the world with their melodic and infectious dance hits. Sierra Maestra was another great band from that same era. Cuban music has been around a long time and will continue to thrill audiences around the world.

80s Music Hits

June 10th, 2010

We tend to think of the 70s as the disco era and the 60s as the time when rock music developed. 80s music hits included great bands like Tears for Fears and their fantastic international number one hit Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Shout. The 60s were the days of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, and a host of other great bands that we now think of as the seminal groups in rock history. But the 80s were a different story and do not get the respect that many experts think it should.

The 80s was also the time of bands such as the Psychedelic Furs and their big 80s music hit ìPretty in Pinkî from the movie of the same name. There were modern pop groups too like Pet Shop Boys and their huge 80s music hit East End Boys and West End Girls or the digital Depeche Mode with Strange Love, Policy of Truth, Personal Jesus and Route 66.

Who can forget Simple Minds and Don’t You Forget About Me? There were plenty of great groups making 80s music hits that just don’t get the credit they deserve. The 80s were also the time of Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna, three giants of the industry who continued to churn out hit after hit for many years. Prince Purple Rain was just the right blend of rock and soul and the big hit from the album was Let’s Go Crazy.
80s music hits were not limited to Pop music, but were also being created by bonafide rock bands such as Duran Duran with their hit Rio and also Bon Jovi with what many consider one of the best of the 80s music hits Livin On A Prayer.

There were some extremely dark songs as well like the moody Voices Carry by Til Tuesday, a one hit wonder. The Fixx added their fiery brand of rock with Red Skies at Night.

Whimsical music was also the order of the day and groups like Wham and their hit Careless Whispers topped the charts. A-Ha, a pop group from Sweden also rocked on with their big hit Take on Me.

The Ups and Downs of Learning Guitar

June 7th, 2010

For the most part, learning to play guitar is thrilling and fun. However, every guitarist can have the so-called ups and downs in their learning and play. Sometimes your play may be totally breathtaking and you feel up, while other times you can make tons of mistakes and feel down. In this article, we will explain the reason to these “downs” and give advice on how to avoid them.

There are three major ingredients for a perfect play: motivation, patience, and mood. So, if you find yourself in the “down” state, try to adjust these three.

1. Motivation: The main point is to have a strong motivation. Remember why we decided to learn to play guitar. Do you have a favorite song that you want to master? Do you want to impress your friends or family? Do you want to play in a band? Try to remember your motivation. You can even write it down on a sheet of paper, or find an image that would symbolize your ultimate goal, and hang it on the wall in front of you.

2. Perseverance and patience: Many guitarists want to accomplish everything at once, but it does not work this way. You need to stock up with patience and persevere.

3. Mood: If you sat down to play the guitar with a bad mood; it will not work too well, so do your best to improve your mood.

If you have good motivation, a lot of patience, and play in a good mood, you will have all that is needed to succeed and reach another “up” period. The “up” is when you play much better than before. It is when you play some melody the way that only professionals could distinguish your play from that of the original performer.

What else can be done to lift your spirits? Read biographies of the great guitarists and listen to beautiful guitar music. Another good way is “comparison” – try to remember how you were before, and you’ll see that you have achieved tremendous results. You can become much better than now if you keep being positive, stay motivated, and persevere.

Finally, remember to practice each day in order to master guitar. It often happens that a guitarist loses their mood and concentration, such as after a vacation or the holidays. This can lead to making a lot of mistakes, losing the speed of play, and losing plasticity in the fingers. If you abandon your guitar for a couple of weeks, you may soon see the above “symptoms”. The best remedy is daily practice. Playing the guitar every day can boost your progress by 50% compared to playing it 3 times a week.

You don’t have to play for hours. It’s enough to have 30 minutes of daily practice. You can allocate more time on the weekends. The main thing is to take a new step every day, even if it will only be 5 new chords. If you miss a day, try to recover the next day. Also, avoid bad mood. Try to improve your mood first, and only then take your guitar.

Original Song in our life

June 3rd, 2010

We know of a lot of great musicians who have never written an original song in their life. Some of the greatest technically brilliant musicians of all time were never able to write good, popular songs.
Some of the worst instrumentalists of all time have written original rock songs that have made millions of dollars so it is bewildering to think that the best have trouble creating original tunes. Although the left side and right side of the brain theory has been debunked, it is still basically true that creative people do not always make the best technicians and vice versa.

Original tunes are not created using a formula. That being said, there are some guidelines for writing popular and rock tunes and that formula has worked brilliantly for many years and for many of the top selling artists of all time. The chorus is also called the hook and may be repeated at the end while the recording fades.

This does not teach you how to write a hit original song. You still need to use your imagination and have lots of feeling. Most of the time a hit original song comes from a person’s life experience or something painful that happened to them.

I love opera music

May 31st, 2010

I love all kinds of music, but there is definitely something special about opera.
I remember reading a biography of the great operatic italian tenor Pavarotti and learning how about how much he practiced singing. He would spend hours every day at his craft, sometimes singing so long that he lost his voice.

Opera singers certainly enjoy what they are doing, but I think they go into it knowing that a career in opera is what they want, whereas a rock artist or country singer would probably love to make a living as a musician in a band, but their happiness does not necessarily depend on that happening.

The way that I was able to figure this out was by comparing my experiences at the opera with recordings of opera, and comparing opera to other genres of music that I have heard live and recorded.
I am not sure why opera music produces the best singers, but I have a few ideas. First, with country and rock artists, they are usually writing their own songs.

Music and the Mind—An Interesting Relationship

May 30th, 2010

As a great lover of music, I have often marveled at the relationship between music and the mind and how certain situations in life seem to call for different types of music. I sat down one day to think about all of the different styles of music that I like and occasions in life when they are appropriate or even seem to help me, and what I found was very interesting.

I had once read an article that talked about music and the mind and how classical music can actually help you prepare for a test. I can’t remember exactly what the correlation was, but I tried it myself while studying and found that it did seem to help me to concentrate better. Even to this day, when I am working on a big project, I will put on some Mozart or Grieg and get to work.

My friend Eddie said he used to like to listen to classical music to get to sleep at night, and almost always found that it did the trick for him.

On the flip side of that, whenever I am lifting weights, I always try to listen to heavy metal or hip hop. I am not sure what the relationship between music and the mind is in this case, but I think it has something to do with the hard-driving, aggressive nature of both styles that really gets your adrenaline pumping and helps you to push through. I don’t think I could ever listen to classical music during a weight-lifting workout, or heavy metal while trying to study or absorb something.

Whenever I am out with my wife, I always want to hear opera or jazz. There seems to be a romantic element to these styles of music that is not necessarily apparent in other genres. Both are relaxing to me and are not difficult to talk over.

Another type of music that I really like is country, and I have found that when I am working out in my yard, I like to listen to that. I am not sure if other people have that type of feeling, because I have never known anyone that did, but for me, I like the feeling of being out in the fresh air, working hard, and listening to country music.

The relationship between music and the mind is an interesting one. What is it that makes one kind of music perfect for one situation, and completely inappropriate for another? I am not sure if I will ever understand why we tend to associate certain styles of music with certain activities, but I do believe that music enhances just about everything we do.

Great 80s Music Hits

May 19th, 2010

When most people think of the 80s they do not have very fond memories of the music that was on the air at the time. We tend to think of the 70s as the “disco” era and the 60s as the time when rock music developed. The 60s were the days of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, and a host of other great bands that we now think of as the seminal groups in rock history. But the 80s were a different story and do not get the respect that many experts think it should.

80s music hits included great bands like Tears for Fears and their fantastic international number one hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and “Shout”. Who can forget Simple Minds and “Don’t You Forget About Me”? There were plenty of great groups making 80s music hits that just don’t get the credit they deserve.

There were modern pop groups too like Pet Shop Boys and their huge 80s music hit “East End Boys and West End Girls” or the digital Depeche Mode with “Strange Love”, “Policy of Truth”, “Personal Jesus” and “Route 66”. Other cult bands with truly great musicians sprang up like The Cure and their hit “Just Like Heaven”.

The 80s was also the time of bands such as the Psychedelic Furs and their big 80s music hit “Pretty in Pink” from the movie of the same name. There was also R.E.M. and their song “Losing My Religion” which was in many ways responsible for the proliferation of 90s style Modern Rock.

80s music hits were not limited to Pop music, but were also being created by bonafide rock bands such as Duran Duran with their hit “Rio” and also Bon Jovi with what many consider one of the best of the 80s music hits “Livin’ On A Prayer”. And who will ever forget Guns n’ Roses with “Sweet Child of Mine” which sounds as fresh today as it was back then.

The 80s were also the time of Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna, three giants of the industry who continued to churn out hit after hit for many years. Prince’s “Purple Rain” was just the right blend of rock and soul and the big hit from the album was “Let’s Go Crazy”. U2 began in the 80s and their songs “With or Without You” and “Pride (In the Name of Love) from their giant album The Joshua Tree began a long string of massive 80s music hits for them.

There were some extremely dark songs as well like the moody “Voices Carry” by Til Tuesday, a one hit wonder. The Fixx added their fiery brand of rock with “Red Skies at Night”.

60’s music hits

April 28th, 2010

The 1960s are fondly remembered as a particulary rich time in music history. While the birth of rock and roll came a decade previous, it’s the 1960s that saw rock and roll become a cultural phenomenon unparalleled before or since. As a result, there are a plethora of 60’s music hits that are still alive and well today, as recognizable as anything from modern acts like Radiohead, Jay-Z, The White Stripes, and everything in between.

Of course when thinking of 60’s music hits, you should start with the most famous band of the 1960s, and really the most famous band of all time: The Beatles. They originally formed in the late 1950s, went through a couple of personnel changes, and eventually settled upon the famous quartet of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in 1962. From there they went to Hamburg, which was a far more forward-thinking city in terms of music than anything in the United Kingdom at the time, and became a European sensation. (They did play some gigs in their hometown of Liverpool as well, but it’s the Hamburg time that is remembered as being most crucial in forming the Beatles’ sound and legend).

Later that year they finally hit it big with their first chart-topper, “Love Me Do.” It hit number seventeen in the United Kingdom, and among 60’s music hits it’s still considered one of the best. Ironically, though, their first big hit didn’t feature all four Beatles; Starr was replaced on drums for that particular song by a studio drummer (who had the good fortune of receiving royalties for years). It was the last time all four Beatles wouldn’t feature on a particular song.

A year later they found themselves in America at the spearhead of the British Invasion, and produced a string of 60’s music hits with their albums Please Please Me, Meet the Beatles, and A Hard Day’s Night. The third single off of Please Please Me, “From Me to You,” was their first number one hit and really began the birth of Beatlemania. Lennon and McCartney had penned the song together and would later admit that, as with much of the band’s early work, they were simply trying to copy the style of previous rock and roll acts like Buddy Holly and The Everyly Brothers. Lennon once went so far as to say that the words to the Beatles early songs were mostly meaningless.

After that early period, the Beatles evolved considerably over the years. Following the success of “From Me to You” and, even moreso, “I want to Hold Your Hand,” Lennon and McCartney became more experimental both lyrically and musically. The album Help! was a big step forward in that regard, and that progress redoubled with Rubber Soul and Revolver, ultimately culminating with The White Album and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band later in the decade. Those last two are considered by many to be the gold standard for 60’s music hits and rock and roll as a whole.

Gino Vanelli Free Live Videos

April 8th, 2010

Gino Vanelli is a marvelous singer coming from Montreal. He established -along with his brother Joe Vanelli- a huge achievement in the so called progressive rock in the late 70s early 80s.

His music style is a blend of crooner style of singing with modern jazz rock music and heavy drumming. He owns an amazing voice and despite being really extroverted and self centered, he leaves lots of room to his virtuosos musians. Most of the songs last over five minutes and features long soli and instrumental passages that are simply splendid.

Today he adopted a more jazzy approach, his last studio album “The Best and Beyond” was launched in 2009, and he released a live album “Live at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2002″ in 2010. His biggest hit ever was the song Black Car in 1985 and is considered as his worse song and most commercial attempts by real fans and musicians.

Music Favorite holds 10s of live and studio videos of Gino Vanelli to watch and enjoy for free.
