We know of a lot of great musicians who have never written an original song in their life. Some of the greatest technically brilliant musicians of all time were never able to write good, popular songs.
Some of the worst instrumentalists of all time have written original rock songs that have made millions of dollars so it is bewildering to think that the best have trouble creating original tunes. Although the left side and right side of the brain theory has been debunked, it is still basically true that creative people do not always make the best technicians and vice versa.
Original tunes are not created using a formula. That being said, there are some guidelines for writing popular and rock tunes and that formula has worked brilliantly for many years and for many of the top selling artists of all time. The chorus is also called the hook and may be repeated at the end while the recording fades.
This does not teach you how to write a hit original song. You still need to use your imagination and have lots of feeling. Most of the time a hit original song comes from a person’s life experience or something painful that happened to them.

Everyone must start with the basics when learning to play the piano. That means understanding and reading sheet music. So, after leaning the scale, it is time to buy some piano sheet music and begin playing.
Of course, you will want to choose some basic tunes and beginners pieces first. Much like any other job, sport or activity, you must learn to walk before you can run. So, before you choose the piano sheet music for Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, try London’s Burning for beginners.

I get a lot of email where songwriters ask how to come up with musical ideas. Following are some of the methods that I have used:
Since lyrics don’t come easily for me, I’ll discuss that topic first. Fifty percent of the battle is keeping your mind open for little lines that might be floating around, as you go about your daily routine. I’ve gotten great ideas during one on one conversations with others. Invariably, someone will say something that strikes me as funny or poetic and I’ll make a note of it. It’s just a matter of being on the look-out. I’d say that I’m equally participating in the conversation and trying to get some good lyrics out of it too. Sometimes, you can get even better stuff by eavesdropping on outside conversations. I know it sounds rude, but we’re doing it for art’s sake, right? Again, we’re just keeping our ears and minds open.

How do we invent new musical ideas? Analyzing chord progressions of great songs is a good way to build your vocabulary. When I hear chords or riffs that really interest me, I’ll write them down and try to adapt them for my own use.
For instance, when I heard the tune “Save Tonight” by Eagle Eye Cherry, I became very interested in writing a song that consisted of the same chords over and over. I got out my guitar and experimented with a few progressions, until I came up with the |E |B-7|Cmaj7|G A| that became “Hold Me ‘Til I’m Free”. By the way, those lyrics started with the title.
