How Diaphragm Singing Can Help You Achieve An Amazing Singing Voice

September 29th, 2009

The human diaphragm plays an important role in breathing in and breathing out air. For humans to be able to inhale, it needs a system of muscles that connect at the lower level and surround the lungs, the system is called the diaphragm. Human beings can also control the air being expelled from the lungs through the diaphragm.

Using muscles in breathing in and out air is necessary in diaphragm singing. This is because breathing out is just like singing but without the sound. The sound that is being created by the person performing the action.

Now, do this test to try diaphragm singing. First, while trying to sing, inhale and then exhale. Next, again while tying to sing, inhale and then exhale really slowly. After the two exercises, you will notice that there’s a huge difference between the two. This is because exhaling too quickly expels air as well, therefore there will be less air for you to use necessary for proper diaphragm singing and hitting the notes.

Bear in mind that when you practice breathing exercises, it is important that when you breath in you must also push your stomach out. Then you can start adding your singing sound as you breath out air. If breathing in and out is done correctly, then you will be producing a rich, strong and clear sound. If not done correctly, your singing voice will sound tight and might break. So remember to expand your lungs and rib cage when singing, you can do so by proper diaphragm singing.

One way that helps proper diaphragm singing is by opening your throat or also known as “yawning.” This will loosen, if not eliminates the tightness of the throat. Because when your throat is tight, tendency is that you’ll sound pitchy and will produce a voice that may sound unnatural. Don’t think that you are the only person committing this mistake, if you think your are guilty of it, because a lot of singers commit the same mistake as well. Now, to correct this, your option is to hire a vocal coach that will teach you proper voice modulation.

By strengthening your voice with correct breathing exercises, you’ll definitely learn how to control your diaphragm. The key is to never blow out air too fast when you start to add your sound when singing. In this way, you’ll not cause much pressure that may damage your vocal chords.

It is clear, that the best singing voice can only be achieved when you do the learning process correctly. There are tons of websites that can help you in the whole process of achieving a vibrant singing voice. Start now by strengthening your diaphragm with proper breathing exercises.

Lena Horne

November 8th, 2008

Lena Horne is one of the most popular African-American jazz legend singers. She was born in 1917 Lena Mary Calhoun Horne in New York City. She performed with the greatest jazz musicians such as Duke Ellington and Artie Shaw. She lives in New York City today and does not appear in the public eye anymore. Lena is most famous for the movie Stormy Weather, in which she sung the title song, in the 1940’s. Contrary to how music careers usually begin, Lena grew up in an elite family. She lived in a black bourgeois area in Brooklyn, New York.

Her father Edwin Horne left them when she was three-years-old. Her mother Edna Scottron, daughter of an inventor, was an actress with a black theater group and traveled a lot. Lena’s grandparents raised her. Though, she was said to have been a part of the Black elite, racial discrimination still existed. Lena Horne and her friend Paul Robeson embarked on a lifelong effort to fight for Civil Rights.
